NYSSA Releases Cursebreaker EP

“A renegade force” - Clash Magazine

I won’t be the one thing between you and rock bottom: NYSSA’s vocals stand starkly spotlit, accompanied by sparse guitar. “The Ground,” the third and final new song released with NYSSA’s new EP, Cursebreaker, out today, sees NYSSA’s trembling vibrato grow in resolve as the song fights the pull of the deep.

“‘The Ground’ comes from the idea of the Underworld,” says NYSSA. “The revelation at the heart of this song came from a psychedelic ritual I performed just before New Year’s Eve. This song became a spell that accompanies me and provides fortification as I move through this life.”

The EP also includes three new recordings from NYSSA’s previous albums. From the Stax-inspired version of “Misty Morning” to “#1Girl,” an ode to best friends, to the slow build of “Life is Hard,” (cut me some slack, Jack!) NYSSA’s catalogue is replete with songs of daily wins and struggles against the backdrop of larger themes of autonomy, destruction and rebirth. Cursebreaker ends with NYSSA’s celestial cover of “Heaven” by The  Psychedelic Furs, a fitting choice for NYSSA’s dark romanticism and post-punk influences.

“From the Underworld to the Heavens. This is my way of saying that Heaven lives in a good relationship. Not to be too corny, but my mom, my friends, my partner… I feel like I’m surrounded by angels. Let the trumpets sound.”

Cursebreaker is a Celtic-tinged, gothic folk-leaning rock and roll collection, where breakup song and protest song collide. The EP tells a cautionary tale about the risks of cornering someone who is willing to fight their way out, no matter the cost. Cursebreaker features vocals/flute by Nyssa, alongside Al Robinson (guitar/keys), Daniel Brooks (drums), Henry Nicholson (bass), Alana Amram (bass), Chase Lombardo (drums), Holly Carpenter (violin) and Gideon Brooks (trumpet).

Equal parts hungering, thrashing, glowering and transcendent, Cursebreaker unleashes NYSSA the spell-maker.

ABOUT NYSSA

London, UK, based artist and songwriter NYSSA is known for her vivid lyrical imagination, emotive vocal power, and genre-blurring approach to modern rock and alt-pop. Best experienced live, her captivating performances perfectly blend animal instincts with an operatic vocal power and range.

Now part of London’s burgeoning community of new wave punks and outsider artists, where she moonlights as flutist for many emerging bands, the Polaris Music Prize nominated NYSSA is active in the UK and Europe, including shows with Anna Erhard and at Rolling Stone Beach Festival. Her storytelling draws on myth, emotion, and lived experience, offering a rich, distinctive perspective and a strong melodic instinct.
