JULY TALK - WHEN YOU STOP (PIANO VERSION)
you draw a sketch of yerself up in the sky
hand it to me with a look of defeat in yer eye
don't concern myself with how yer portrayed
It’s been said that attention is the greatest form of love you can give to someone. So where does our attention lie if we are only focused on ourselves? “You say you feel there's no one listening / been hearing that a lot these days” resonates louder than a choral of devices.
At a time when it can sometimes feel like nothing really matters except that everything matters so much, “When You Stop (Piano Version)” has the finish line in sight. The strong but gentle piano makes an easy ride for Leah’s fluid vocals and Peter’s earthy gruff, building up to a cathartic birth of two worlds, visible simultaneously only when you stand still long enough to pay attention. Within this stripped down version we arrive at the complex question: What might happen if you stop paying attention to everything but yourself?
Maybe what happens when you stop running from it is that you’ll catch up to it instead of it chasing after you. “When You Stop” is where you get off, where you need to be: with the other runners. It’s a song we can collectively hear because we can all sing its words as though they were our own.
and i know that the pain that you feel is yer own
and there's nothing to say
but i wish i could take it away
If we all decide to stop running at the same time, maybe we’ll end up being together more often. A great healing. A world united. Maybe that’s just the thing we all need right now: to stop so we can move forward.
