Holiday Contest
Tour Dates
Oh, hello there! What have you been up to for the past 7 months or so since our last newsletter? Us? Oh, not much, just busy counting pandemic waves and trying to figure out how to fix global supply chain issues. If any of you have a scientific background that would enable us to recycle discarded face masks into vinyl records or a flying tour van that can get our bands over to Vancouver, well that would be absolutely peachy! We have also spent the past 7 months scheming up the ultimate contest and holiday promotion for our online store, which you can find hidden deep in the following text, only if you read every single word and deeply absorb this stellar content into your psyche.
TANYA TAGAQ TAKES OVER TIMES SQUARE
If you happen to be in NYC at the moment, please grab a giant slice of pizza for me as you make your way over to Times Square for your annual photo with a super gentle and definitely non-aggressive or stinky dude in an Elmo costume. After tipping accordingly, take a look around at the bright city lights and marvel at a freakin’ 12 story high Tanya Tagaq looming over all of you! Obvs Tanya already has a giant voice and a giant personality, but now she is also a giant giant of Times Square, thanks to Spotify Canada’s EQUAL Artist of the Month program!
Now that might seem like big (as in physically large) enough news, but we have also dropped two more bops on ya from Tagaq’s forthcoming album Tongues, produced by Saul Williams and Gonjasufi. “Colonizer” and “Colonizer (Tundra Mix)” are two songs that are both lyrically and thematically connected, but they are actually very different in origin. “Colonizer” springs from Tagaq’s improvised live performances, whereas “Colonizer (Tundra Mix)” is the result of collaboration in the studio with Tongues producers.
Listen to “Colonizer” here.
Listen to “Colonizer (Tundra Mix)” here.
“Colonizer” arrives with a video trailer produced and directed by Danuta (Leah and Peter from JULY TALK, more on that later).
ICYMI: Watch a tongue and cross clash on a tundra battlefield in the epic video for the title track of “Tongues” here.
THE DEAD SOUTH RELEASE EASY LISTENING FOR JERKS, PART I & II
The Dead South are back with two brand new EPs in the form of Easy Listening for Jerks, Parts I & II. The first is a collection of bluegrass songs that reimagine cheery classic tunes, such as “You Are My Sunshine,” with dark and desperate tones (such as the tone of a banjo). The latter is a set of modern rock anthems, but also flipped to be all bluegrassy (of course). While vastly different in origin, each EP bears the watermark of the iconic Dead South sound and together they form a crash course in the band’s musical influences. “You Are My Sunshine” but make it “Chop Suey”? That’s The Dead South!
Rolling out this melting pot of genres and influences, The Dead South already released their take on “You Are My Sunshine” (or as we like to call it, “YAMS”), the first from upcoming EP I. They have now followed up with a new single. “People Are Strange,” from EP II, opening doors with an entertaining video that puts an intergalactic spin on the song’s theme of alienation. Aliens are very intergalactic, so it makes sense, really. Watch as our beloved bearded quartet are beamed into a Banj-UFO one by one and are forced to play in front of an intergalactic audience in their new video.
Rich with quality finger picking (no fret buzz here!) and replete with harmonies (replete might be my new favourite word), Easy Listening for Jerks is replete with many new moods of songs we think we know so well. Pre-save the forthcoming Part I & II EPs replete with several formats such as CD and vinyl that are replete with ravenous re-imaginings of country classics and hard rock reveries. Replete and repeat, that’s our motto!
Check out the Twin Twangler Tour (dates outlined lower down), firstly because alliteration is the best, and secondly to see if The Dead South are heading to your town in 2022.
JULY TALK AND SIX SHOOTER RECORDS SEAL THE WITH NEW SONG “I AM WATER.” LIVE AT LAST TOUR STARTS NEXT WEEK.
We are deeply thrilled to welcome JULY TALK to the world of Six Shooter Records with the release of their newest song, “I Am Water.” We’ve kinda been raving about how much we love July Talk for several years now, so this may come as no surprise... but please act surprised!
“I Am Water” takes the popular “I am weed” quote from the beautiful love story of Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, and flips the script to be more like that movie where that woman falls in love with that weird sea monster guy. Oh wait, I am being told that I interpreted it all wrong... music has so many layers, oopsies! This song is actually about moving our bodies like the tide being controlled by the moon, and also something about Scorpio season... so yeah, I think it’s maybe about dancing? Idk, but it’s a super tight jam!
This new era of July Talk also brings the founding of Danuta, a home base for Leah Fay Goldstein and Peter Dreimanis’ many artistic pursuits, starting with new videos for Tanya Tagaq and Jasmyn Burke.
Dive into “I Am Water,” produced and mixed by Graham Walsh, in the video here. Get your tickets for Live At Last here.
WILLIAM PRINCE PLAYS NPR MUSIC'S TINY DESK
William Prince performed a Tiny Desk (Home) Concert with songs from Reliever and Earthly Days including “Lighthouse,” “Wasted,” and “Breathless.” I also performed an unofficial Tiny Desk (Home) Concert that was just the sounds of me eating black licorice and leftover halloween candy while I worked. William Prince’s performance was admittedly better (depending on the review criteria, I suppose).
"Great songs will find a way...it ain't the singer -- it's the song, I was told," Prince says while introducing “Breathless,” a song that has taken him around the world, which is maybe why he is out of breath. NPR Music's Bob Boilen adds: “There's truth there, but for me, seeing him in Nashville in 2018, it was undoubtedly his voice that got me listening.” Sooo, does this mean that Prince and Boilen need to fight now? Song Vs. Singer battle royale 2021!
Watch William Prince’s Tiny Desk here.
RADIO GOES BANANAZ FOR BOY GOLDEN
We love hearing Six Shooter’s newest artist, Boy Golden, on the radio with the song, “KD And Lunch Meat,” from his debut album Church of Better Daze. This delicious mono mix ode to cheap snacks has stayed in the Top 10 at Alternative Radio for the past 10 weeks, and has grown beyond being a “song of the summer” (CBC’s Grant Lawrence) to a soundtrack for all seasons. The song’s irresistible charm and optimistic outlook is a perfect low pressure anthem for celebrating small wins and fresh starts. I don’t personally dig on lunch meat, but I frickin’ love KD. My fave way to prepare it is: boil and drain the noods, mix in the cheesy powder and stir it up (no milk needed, the residual water on the noods is plenty to get saucy), add some fried shallots and sliced up veggie dawgs, and give it a gentle spritz of sriracha. Bam! Trust, that is the clearest path to a delicious evening.
Watch “KD And Lunch Meat” official video, filmed on location at the Better Daze art exhibit, here.
Boy Golden and the Church of Better Daze band just played their first show in Toronto (travel provided by his now famous Toyota Previa). Bolo ties, smiles and sweet solos abound. See them as soon as you can. We can help with that, check below for all upcoming tour dates, which include opening for July Talk in Saskatoon on December 16 and prairie winter festivals early next year.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WHITEHORSE'S DOUBLE RELEASES OF 2021
Whitehorse has been super prolific during the ol’ pandy! Two albums in one year! In March, they released their album Modern Love, a hushed, lo-fi outing about dancing with your boo on TikTok (not really, but that would be a pretty modern type of love, I’d say), and then BAM, here they are back again with a second full-length album, Strike Me Down, this time spiralling into psychedelic kaleidoscopic vision.
Our own Art Squad (more on this below) delivered two new videos to showcase Strike Me Down’s swirling psychedelia.
“Am I Just Gonna Stand Here (While You Take My Girl Away)” is dizzy and giddy in sound while it weighs its options, or lack thereof. With the help of a multi-image prism filter (true story, I once followed director Lyle Bell all around Toronto as he tried to find the ultimate door knob... er, prism filter... to point his camera through), the video translates album themes of building and breaking into set-smashing, confetti bursting abandon. Confetti bursting abandon is always fun when you don’t have to be the one who cleans up the confetti! Watch here.
A laugh track for heartache, “Sometimes Amy” arrived with a video that dials up the dear diary drama. Revisit the best 90s sitcom never made here, and marvel at Whitehorse’s synchronized dancing abilities! They really nailed it!
Read on to go behind the scenes on Whitehorse’s double album drop of 2021.
WHITEHORSE X ART SQUAD MINI-DOC: MEET OUR ARTIST- IN-RESIDENCE LYLE BELL, THE CREATIVE WIZARD BEHIND THE LOOK OF WHITEHORSE'S NEW ALBUMS
Six Shooter celebrates the work of artist-in-residence Lyle Bell, leader of the label’s in- house Art Squad, with a new mini-doc that goes behind the scenes and into the creative minds of the visual team behind Whitehorse’s 2021 releases. Watch the dazzling looks of Modern Love and Strike Me Down evolve in the video. Aaaaand you may even get a wee sneak peek into a yet unannounced third album! What the heck?!
Lyle Bell, currently the resident graphic designer and photographer at Six Shooter Records, is potentially the most creative and purely artistic guy I know. He’s one of those people that is just good at everything he does, with a boundless stream of great ideas and creative energy. Lyle is an accomplished musician and songwriter, relentlessly writing and touring with his bands The Wet Secrets, Whitey Houston and synthlords Shout Out Out Out Out. He cut his teeth working at famed alt paper Vue Weekly, screen printing gig posters, building cameras and obsessing over analog photography in the dark room. Lyle is an absolute expert at taking artistic concepts from idea to finished product with meticulous detail. And on top of all that, he is my buddy and he is super fun to be around! One other important detail about Lyle is that one time while eating at a White Spot in Kamloops, he neglected to finish the pickle included with his meal, opting to leave the last little bit just sitting on his tray. This earned him the long term nickname “picklenub”, a name which he has periodically tried to offload onto other people, but everyone knows that Lyle is the true picklenubberz.
SIX SHOOTER MINI-BULLETS: ELLIOTT BROOD ON TOUR NOW, THE DEEP DARK WOODS X MARTIN GUITAR, SKYE WALLACE ON TOUR WITH CROWN LANDS, ZAKI IBRAHIM PLAYS LUMINATO
Ok, this section is like speed dating for Six Shooter fans. Except every one of these lil’ nuggets is a perfect match that you will fall in love with foreverrrrr.
Elliott BROOD are reunited after a long lockdown separated by the Canadian-US border. Catch them on tour in Canada and Europe, and listen to them perform songs from their latest album, Keeper, live for the first time.
The Deep Dark Wood’s Ryan Boldt collaborated with Martin Guitar on their Jam on the Road session. Watch here as Boldt performs “Treacherous Waters,” “Drifting On A Summer’s Night,” and “18th Of December" on his favourite guitar. You'll also receive a mini-history lesson on how the instrument was manufactured when supplies were scarce during WWII.
Skye Wallace will soon hit the road to join Crown Lands on tour this fall. Check out the tour dates below to see if they will be visiting an Ontario town near you. If you don’t live in Ontario, I’m afraid that there are likely no Ontario towns near you, soz!
Luminato’s Guided by Starlight — Exploring Toronto’s Musical Galaxy event celebrates and showcases the cosmic radiance of Toronto musicians from east to west. Watch Zaki Ibrahim’s stunning performance with High Priestess’ James Baley here.
OK! YOU MADE IT! HERE IS THE TOP SECRET HIDDEN CONTEST AND STORE DISCOUNT JAMBOREE SECTION!
