Hello! Did you miss us?! According to my records, this is only the second newsletter we have sent out in all of 2020! So sorry about that, since the end of February (when the last newsletter was transmitted) we have just been so busy with all of our artist’s touring and meet-and-greet events and such that we just didn’t have any time to write to you. Just kidding, hahahaha! Really this dumdum COVID-19 thing smashed the entire world and made 2020 a big ol’ ball of suck, so we have been busy playing Animal Crossing, baking sourdough, and watching innovative YouTube videos of bands playing shows in their living rooms.

JOIN WHITEHORSE’S HOLIDAY HAPPY HOUR ON DECEMBER 4. LISTEN TO A WHITEHORSE WINTER CLASSIC WHILE YOU WAIT.

“This time of year, just a mix of emotions...”

‘Tis the season to revisit Whitehorse’s melancholic holiday album, A Whitehorse Winter Classic. Each year, a different song hits us in a new way. For 2020, we are feeling Whitehorse’s cover of The Pretenders’ “2000 Miles” for so many reasons (one reason is that the number 2000 is pretty close to the number 2020, and another reason is that I am pretending everything is ok). Wherever you’ll be (or won’t be) this COVID Christmas, take care, wear your mask, and keep cozy with Whitehorse’s beautiful holiday album and perhaps a mulled vaccine of some kind, if that’s available in your area. Hopefully the holidays will be a bit more normal next year, but at least this year you can still enjoy the loving embrace of a Whitehorse album, awwwww. LISTEN HERE

Ticket alert! For their first Side Door show, Whitehorse takes their lockdown happy hour concert formula and adds a dash of holiday cheer, with selections from their entire collection along with songs from A Whitehorse Winter Classic. Celebrate the season together, apart, with Whitehorse’s Holiday Happy Hour. Get your tickets for Whitehorse’s Holiday Happy Hour, December 4th. Tickets for the internet, what a time to be alive! JON BOX SOX 2020

With love, we announce the continuation of Jon Box Sox, a winter sock drive in memory of our friend and colleague Jon Box.

Last year we worked with artists, labels, distributors, publishers, and independent record stores across Canada and gathered 1094 pairs of socks that were donated to shelters and drop-in centres in over 15 communities across Canada. I was really hoping we would get 6 more pairs to make it an even 1100, but 1094 is still pretty good. This year, we’re asking friends and family to donate a minimum of $100 to Mission Services London and/or Red Door Family Shelter in Toronto and in return we’ll personally ship a pair of 2020 Jon Box Sox to your home. So still very much a sock driven initiative, just with an extra twist on how you can be an extra great and compassionate person with warm feet.

Visit sixshooterrecords.com/jonboxsox for information on where to donate and how to redeem your pair of Jon Box Sox.

SERVED LIVE: NEW DOUBLE LIVE ALBUM FROM THE DEAD SOUTH COMING JANUARY 29, 2021.

Our first release of 2021 is now announced! The Dead South have announced Served Live, their first double live album, a true rite of passage for any band, available for pre- order now. Remember the olden days when The Dead South could actually serve us live? That seems like so long ago that it could have been when The Dead South’s old timey outfits were still the current fashion of the day! Served Live will be out in January, but you can shop new t-shirts and other under-the-tree options along with your pre-orders HERE.

Recorded during the Served Cold World Tour, which traveled the USA, UK and Ireland before the pandemic pressed pause on all the things we love (except for wearing pajamas all day, no pause on that much loved activity), Served Live is a full concert set list recorded at iconic and beloved venues, from London’s Brixton Academy and Denver’s Mission Ballroom to The Belasco Theatre in LA. Featuring new material from the JUNO Award winning album Sugar & Joy, alongside the band’s top charting, global viral mega hits from previous records, Served Live puts you in the front row (assuming you sit closer to the speakers than your pets do) in your own home, where we hope you’ll stay safe.

With Served Live, The Dead South celebrate the hard-working, music-loving people who make tours happen, from venue owners to agents to promoters. It’s been a pretty rough year for the live music industry, so every boot stomp and finger snap and banjo twiddle means a lot!

Served Live will be released January 29, 2021 via Six Shooter Records.

WILLIAM PRINCE TO PERFORM ON THE ANDY KIM CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. CURATES SPOTIFY CANADA’S INDIGENOUS PLAYLIST.

William Prince is confirmed to perform on The Andy Kim Christmas Special, which airs on December 19 at 8pm local time on CityTV, CityTV.com and via LiveNation.com. Prince joins a star studded cast spanning decades of Canadian music including Andy Kim, Barenaked Ladies, Broken Social Scene, Buffy Sainte-Marie, City and Colour, Glass Tiger & Roch Voisine, Jully Black, Ron Sexsmith, Sam Roberts, Sarah McLachlan & Serena Ryder. The TV special is raising donations to be split equally between Crew Nation, Food Banks Canada & CAMH Gifts of Light. Donate HERE, then tune in on the 19th to be entertained, knowing that you helped make a difference.

With two new albums out in 2020 (we seem to have a habit of attracting the most prolific artists to our label), Reliever and Gospel First Nation, William Prince’s message of care and gratitude have been the source of much comfort for his fans. From winning the SOCAN Songwriter of the Year Prize to being included as one of the albums in Dave Cobb’s Producer of the Year Grammy nomination, plus a whackload of Canadian Folk Music Awards that were just announced, Prince’s songs and stories continue to find new fans around the world. We have been excited to release The Sunday Verse, his new podcast, alongside these great albums. You can find new episodes of Season 2, produced Julie Penner, every Sunday wherever you get your podcasts.

For those who appreciate a well-curated playlist (I mean, it would be pretty weird if you didn’t, tbh), don’t miss William’s thoughtful, decade-spanning mix for Spotify’s Indigenous playlist this month. From William: “Indigenous” is not a genre. I wanted to create an expansive, historical and current listening experience that showcases the many colours within the music created by Indigenous people. Over 3 hours of past, present and future sounds from the hearts and minds of Indigenous artists as diverse as the sounds themselves.

Check out music from Buffy Sainte-Marie, #WillieDunn, Wyatt C. Louis, Raye Zaragoza, ONCE A TREE, Riit, Mattmac, The Jerry Cans, Don Amero, Cale Crowe, Bebe BuckSkin, Lucien Spence, Angela Amarualik, Sebastian Gaskin, Rhonda Head, A Tribe Called Red, Crystal Shawanda, Celeigh Cardinal, Redbone and so many more.

Spanning Traditional, Folk, Country, Roots, Rock, Blues, Electronic, Rap and R&B, from Gospel First Nation to the Halluci Nation and beyond, you’ll find it all on Spotify's Indigenous playlist. LISTEN HERE

ELLIOTT BROOD GET THEIR OWN COFFEE BEAN, REWORK “STAY OUT” AND LAUNCH NEW ONLINE MUSIC CLUB.

Elliott BROOD have expanded the sounds and sights of Keeper, their #1 CKUA and Earshot charting album with two new versions of the big sunny single “Stay Out.” Your new Keeper bonus adventure pack includes a very heart-string pulling acoustic version, which showcases the band’s folkier side, along with a far out west coast option, for those looking to travel further afield in the only way possible right now, through the power of music and imagination, ha ha ha 2020 maaaan. Seriously though, both of these new versions of “Stay Out” are bangers, and you should LISTEN HERE.

On the subject of wishing we could hit the road, Elliott BROOD have also launched a new online music club, which comes complete with its own theme song. A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. (Analytical Criticism Regarding Objectively Narrowing Your Music). Season One will travel the “The Great Canadian Highway” as the band discusses nine different songs that they love, which you can find on these handy playlists on both on Spotify and YouTube. The first episode aired last night (Dec 2) and covered the 401 corridor from Hamilton to Ottawa with stops at venues and local eateries. You can watch it HERE.

***CONTEST ALERT*** The best part of waking up is coffee in our Keeper cup (we mean our coffee cup that is branded to reflect the new Elliot BROOD album Keeper, not the other kind of Keeper cup, coffee doesn’t generally go in there). We ain’t had decaf in a month of Sundays since we started sipping Elliott BROOD’s signature brew from Edmonton’s High Horse Coffee Co. “Month of Sundays” (named after their song) is a medium roast with “smooth, creamy vanilla” notes. Order your beans direct HERE, and get yourself buzzing for each episode of A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. We’re serving up a chance to win a care package including beans, music and a coffee date with the band! Enter to win HERE.

JULY TALK

We are still thinking about July Talk’s monumental and magnificent shows at The Stardust Drive-In in August, from the sheer technical wizardry of syncing ten cameras - including drone! - for a thrilling multimedia event to the pure artistry of the new songs from Pray For It in the set list. Every tiny detail was perfect. It was seriously friggin awesome, and probably the most fun and inspiring thing we did all summer. You can relive that magic with a new video for “The News,” that showcases the projection perfection of the drive-in performance. Watch HERE. Keep your eyes peeled for so much more from July Talk in the next few weeks, they are thinkin’ folks with lots of wacky innovative ideas, so obvs they will be closing out 2020 with a bang!

Head over to July Talk's Instagram to see Which 2020 Headline R U (new fun AR filter).

Make sure to hit the smiley face to try it out. Sign up for July Talk Dispatches HERE.

ZAKI IBRAHIM

We have spent much of 2020 reacquainting ourselves with Zaki Ibrahim’s remarkable catalogue of albums. I suppose that has been one good thing about the world shutting down for a while, it has been great for diving deep into the Zaki Ibrahim catalogue! Did we mention that we have a tendency to work with remarkably prolific artists? Before we say goodbye to 2020 we have one more incredible record to reissue, Ibrahim’s official debut album, Every Opposite. Originally released in 2012, Every Opposite is one of Ibrahim’s most political collections; songs like “The Do” and “Draw the Line” remain as relevant and powerful today as they did when Ibrahim first exploded onto the Polaris Gala stage (where we first saw her perform!). Revisit her performance of “Something In The Water” HERE (I particularly like when she coins the term “Polarious” at the end) and immerse yourself in Every Opposite from front to back on December 4.

A note from Zaki: “In celebration of my debut album Re-release I’ll be performing and speaking about the concept and story behind Every Opposite, how the character I discovered and developed, informed the songs and the short film that never got made... meet me on Instagram Live to watch and celebrate with me on Friday December 4th at 11am PST 2pm EST 9pm SAST.”

TANYA TAGAQ’S SPLIT TOOTH GETS THE OPRAH STAMP.

Tanya Tagaq’s bestselling novel Split Tooth continues to find new fans all over the world. It’s no surprise to see that the book was included in Oprah Magazine’s recent list of must-read Indigenous authors.

Build your own Christmas book-buying list with these incredible writers in mind - read the full list HERE. Support your local bookstore and pick up classic hardcover and paperback editions of Split Tooth, or check out the audiobook edition, read/sung by Tagaq, HERE.

SIX SHOOTER STOCKING STUFFERS

Due to the ultimate bummer of COVID-19, Canada Post is unable to guarantee this year’s shipping deadlines. It’s really too bad that they can’t, since there are some pretty great marketing slogans they could have used. “Shopping online because of the stupid doodoo head pandemic? Don’t worry, your shipment with Canada Post is Guarantined!” and such. Even if your shipping deadline isn’t actually guarantined, we do still encourage all customers to place their orders before December 11th and we will do our best to make sure every package is delivered before the holidays. Santa wears a mask, so it’s chill.

Please email store@sixshooterrecords.com or call us at 416-465-2459 with any questions or concerns.

If you happen to live in Toronto, you may also want to note that all of our store items are available for pick up from our Toronto location (right beside the good ol’ Horseshoe Tavern). All pick-up orders must be placed online and a pick up time will be coordinated with you and our store manager. Please note that our store will be closed from December 21, 2020 - January 4, 2021.
