Uuuugh, I was super duper hungry when I got home today, so I made myself a truly gluttonous, monster-sized, portion of ramen, and now I am too full of ramen to move. Is anyone else so full of ramen right now that they can’t move? What are you gonna do? Never eat again? Sit on the couch and write a Six Shooter newsletter thingy? Me too!
WILLIAM PRINCE’S RELIEVER IS OUT NOW! DON’T MISS HIS USA TV DEBUT ON CBS SATURDAY.
Congratulations to William Prince and everyone involved in the making and sharing of Reliever, his sophomore album. It’s out now! What a reliever! Some lucky fans in Toronto have had the chance to hear new songs performed last week, at CBC Music, SiriusXM and CBC q Live in Guelph (ok, those lucky fans were in Guelph, not Toronto, but close enough to the centre of the universe to count). We are thrilled that now it’s out for ALL lucky fans to hear. Congrats to William on three sold-out shows in Winnipeg last weekend. That’s like one sold out show for each third of Burton Cumming’s moustache! Prince recently announced new tour dates in Ontario in April (some of which are already sold out, we’ll figure out whose moustache they tally up to once we have the full count), and that he’ll be joining Katie Pruitt on the road in the USA this spring.
William Prince recently made his US TV debut with a CBS Saturday Session, where he played new songs “The Spark” and “Always Have What We Had” from Reliever, along with breakout hit “Breathless” (from Earthly Days). Kids across the nation shunned their Saturday morning cartoons to watch this session instead, and did so while willingly trading all of their chocolate for carob. That’s how good it was. Watch here.
For stories behind the music, fans should listen to the Sunday Verse, a new audio project and companion series to the album. Recorded in Winnipeg at The Song Shop, where Prince recorded many songs from Reliever, Sunday Verse is produced by Julie Penner (The Vinyl Café). In the first episode, Prince shares why Sunday is, for him, a time for contemplation. In the second episode, Prince talks about the meaning behind the album title and asks what or who brings you relief. Follow him now for these and more great episodes to come!
Listen to Sunday Verse Episodes One Two, and Three here.
2020 JUNO NOMINATIONS
One word that kiiiinda bugs me is the affirmative “noice”, and it bugs me even more when it gets repeated. Like, if I say “wow, did you hear that Six Shooter artists got approximately one billion JUNO Awards nominations this year?”, and you reply “noice, noice...”, then you best believe I’m cringing, and maybe making a slight character judgement. I mean, I’m sure you are a great person aside from the “noice, noice...” thing. Oddly, as I write this, I realize that it might bug me slightly less if “noice” is punctuated with an exclamation mark, hmm. Noice! Actually, nope, don’t like that either. Not noice.
Six Shooter artists got approximately one billion JUNO Awards nominations this year! Congratulations to all our 2020 JUNO Awards nominees. This year’s nominees include Tanya Tagaq, who is nominated for Toothsayer, an experimental arctic soundscape, and The Dead South for their Billboard chart-topping bluegrass album Sugar & Joy. Whitehorse are getting very comfy on the JUNO Nomo list, as they make it five in a row with a nod for The Northern South Vol. 2. Six Shooter’s 2020 nominees also include some first-timers: Riit for ataataga, an electro pop album in Inuktitut, and the creative team behind the Ensign Broderick’s epic and artful BloodCrush/BloodMyth album package (Kris Knight, Jason Sniderman, Chris Peters, James Mejia, Stefanie Schneider), our first ever nomination in this category.
Save the date: our annual, and quite legendary, Outlaws & Gunslingers JUNOFest show will be happening on Friday, March 13. Lineup (I mean both what acts are playing as well as a lineup at the door to get in, if you know what I’m sayinnn) and details to come! So far, we know that these fine artists will be joining us: Celeigh Cardinal, Del Barber, Digawolf, Harrow Fair, Jason Plumb, Jim Cuddy Family, Justin Rutledge, Meghan Patrick, NQ Arbuckle, Nuela Charles, Riit, Tanika Charles, The Small Glories, Tom Wilson, and Whitehorse, all ably backed by Outlaws & Gunslingers excellent house band, FOGDOG.
Six Shooter nominees will be performing throughout the weekend. I suppose that’s why they call it JUNOfest, the JUNO (nominees) be festin’! Here’s a list of where to find everyone:
CBC q Live at the JUNOS - THURS MAR 12 @ 6:30pm CT, Broadway Theatre.
The Dead South will join CBC q with Tom Power at the Broadway Theatre for a live audience taping in celebration of the JUNOS. Guests include The Sheepdogs, Alexandra Stréliski, Celeigh Cardinal, Sophie Buddle, Jim Cuddy and many more. One time I was part of a live audience, and the rest of the audience had a big singalong of the Brady Bunch theme song to get warmed up for the taping, and I gotta say, everyone kinda shamed me a little bit for not knowing it (I never watched the show, how was I supposed to know?!).
The rest of it was pretty fun though, so I’d recommend you buy tickets for this completely unrelated show which are available here.
JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards - SAT MAR 14 @ 6pm CT
First-time nominee Riit will perform during the JUNO Awards Gala! Tune in via a live stream courtesy of CBC Music. Maybe you will catch a glimpse of us eating dinner while watching the legend Riit.
JUNO SONGWRITER CIRCLE - SUN MARCH 15 @ 12pm CT, TCU Place
Whitehorse will be performing at this year’s JUNO Songwriters’ Circle. Hosted by Lights and CBC q host Tom Power (wow, sounds like Mr. Power is going to have a busy JUNO week), performers also include 2020 JUNO Award nominees Aaron Goodvin, Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine, Nuela Charles, Tim Baker and Tom Wilson/Lee Harvey Osmond. Get your tickets here.
JUNO AWARDS TV BROADCAST - SUN MARCH 15 @ 6pm CT
The Dead South will be performing on the 2020 JUNO Awards broadcast! I sure hope they get ziplined into the show wearing sequined bodysuits! It will probably just be old timey outfits instead though, that’s kinda their schtick. Tickets to the broadcast are on sale here.
TANYA TAGAQ ANNOUNCES SPLIT TOOTH STAGE
PRODUCTION: DÜSSELDORF + BAM (Brooklyn)
PERFORMANCES ON SALE NOW.
You know what they say, it’s pretty tough to cut a cabbage with a tiny knife. This is a proverb I just made up after I realized that my ramen had worn off, and that I was hungry for a wee salad, and then I thought that some purple cabbage might be nice with the lettuce and arugula blend I had going, but the cabbage was difficult to cut, since the knife I had selected was quite tiny and the cabbage was quite large. But you know what they say, the smallest knife is the sharpest! This is another proverb I made up.
Speaking of sharp little knives, Tanya Tagaq continues to expand her art practice into new forms and realms. We are excited to share details about a brand new project, the stage adaptation of her best selling, award-winning novel Split Tooth.
In collaboration with director Kaneza Schaal and visual artist Christopher Myers, this theatrical adaptation comes to life through Tagaq’s incisive (like a tiny knife) voice and words. With the world’s first-ever Inuit throat singing choir featuring all-Inuit performers, new music (more details about this soon) and the physical embodiment of characters from the book, Split Tooth brings Tagaq’s art and action together in a radical, foundational vision of Arctic Futurism. Doesn’t that sound effing amazing?! Yeesh!
Split Tooth will have its European debut in Düsseldorf in May and its North American premiere at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in June.

HOCKEY NIGHT IN NEWSLETTER
You know, I think I have actually admitted this before in this newsletter, but I personally don’t really care at all about hockey. I never tossed around the ol’ puck skin as a child, and it just doesn’t really interest me. This is a real hot take around here in the Canada, and in the Six Shooter office, as we have a large amount of hockey-related news that is really very exciting to those who love both hockey and Six Shooter Records (which I believe to be the majority of all people worldwide). It is now my job to report hockey / SSR related news, starting with music featured on recent editions of Hockey Night In Canada. HNIC did a beautiful job of featuring Rheostatics’ “Beautiful Night” from Here Come The Wolves in a full intro montage (watch the full clip here) and we (especially me) were also thrilled to hear Riit’s “#uvangattauq” on a recent broadcast. Whitehorse just performed at an Ottawa Senators vs. Winnipeg Jets game last night. William Prince will also perform at a Senators game later this month and he will also be taking part in Hometown Hockey when it comes to Peguis First Nation on Sunday, March 1.
THE DEAD SOUTH RELEASE NEW VIDEO FOR "FAT LITTLE KILLER BOY", SHARE LIVE VERSIONS OF BLUE TRASH AND COVER ANNE MURRAY FOR CBC MUSIC JUNOS 365.
Meet Maxwell's bluegrass cousin in a brand new video for "Fat Little Killer Boy," by Rantdog Animation Studios in Edmonton. Watch it here.
"She just kicks so much butt." Truer words have not been spoken about Anne Murray, covered by The Dead South as part of CBC Music’s JUNO's 365. See a different, softer side of our JUNO winning, Billboard-topping band with their celebration of Murray’s 1981 Single of the Year song. Watch/Listen here.
Yesterday on my way home from work I stopped at IKEA and bought this little portable Bluetooth speaker with a belt clip, and then when I got home I clipped it onto my belt and blasted “Who Let The Dogs Out” while I pranced around the house with my dog jumping all over me. It was the best. You may be wondering why I chose this song, rather than a Six Shooter artist. Well, it turns out that my dog is a dog, and he prefers the lyrical content of “Who Let The Dogs Out” over most of the available SSR catalogue, and I felt that it was my duty as a dog parent to make my puppy happy. If I was the parent of a small bearded human child, I would have certainly played The Dead South through my belt speaker while prancing around the house.
And if “Blue Trash” is your jam, there are now two different live versions available to enjoy. Take your pick (or watch both) from Our Vinyl’s version of “Blue Trash” (recorded in a dilapidated brick building in Nashville) or CBC Music’s bluegrass style/shared mic treatment.
Check out tour dates below, more shows have been added to the SERVED COLD USA TOUR in Sept/October.
SIX SHOOTER TURNS 20 THIS YEAR. FIRST ANNIVERSARY EVENT IS LAUNCH OF KNOW & TELL, NEW MENTORSHIP PROGRAM.
Omfg, we are turning 20! Soon we will be the same age as Love Island season 6 contestant Finley! If you don’t watch this show, let me tell you, he is totally 20! This may seem young for a Love Island contestant, but let me tell you, it’s pretty old for a super cool record label! Plus, this means that next year our record label can legally purchase alcohol in the United States! Finally!
We have learned a whole gosh darn lot in our time in the music biz, and in celebration of our 20th year, we are opening our doors to emerging artists and professionals who would benefit from free consultation with members of our 17-person team and other participating colleagues.
We are offering 45-minutes appointments available either in person or via video conference. To make an appointment, applicants are invited to fill out an online form to be matched with our resident expert. Visit the sign-up form to see the range of available topics and questions we can cover, as well as our super sick new Know & Tell logo!
The mandate for this program is intended for general advice, useful consultation, and encouragement... but, if you do happen to pull out an acoustic guitar during the meeting, we might just sign you. JK, please don’t do that!
Perhaps some of you (I’m guessing approximately zero, but “perhaps”) noticed that this edition of Six Shooter Bullets is catalogued as Volume 19, No. 1. That means that I have been writing this thing for 19 years now! Next year for the 20th anniversary of this newsletter, I will be opening my doors to emerging newsletter writers and paronomasiacs, who would benefit from a stern talking to about life choices with our 1 person team (that’s me).
Oh man, I just realized that the broth I made for my ramen (which was a quite tasty coconut milk and turmeric based jobber) managed to splatter all over my white counters and cupboard doors, and now everything is stained yellow. Ugh, time to find out if magic erasers are really magic. Baaiiii!
SIX SHOOTER TURNS 20: SECOND ANNIVERSARY EVENT IS NEW PUBLISHING HOUSE, HIGH PRIESTESS PUBLISHING.
BUT WAIT, that’s not all! Our second major announcement of our 20th anniversary is the launch of High Priestess Publishing, where expertise meets radical (in the Ninja Turtles sense of the word) creativity to unlock the hidden potential of music publishing rights and royalties (spoiler, the hidden potential is moolah, paper, scrilla, dat cheeeese). High Priestess, a new joint venture between Kim Temple and Six Shooter Records, has been created to develop and celebrate an independent roster of songwriting talent.
High Priestess is now home to a vibrant assembly of artists including Witch Prophet, James Baley, SUN SUN and Zaki Ibrahim. By giving voice to a diverse group of creators, the High Priestess catalogue represents authentic songs for every medium. Other services include song catalogue management and royalty administration for composers as well as film & TV producers.
