Hi everybody! How has your summer been? Mine has been so super duper busy that I’ve been having a really hard time finding time to collect summer points! I am now scrambling to cram any summer activities I can into these last few dog days. Last night I earned a summer point by staying up until 2 am making dill pickles after work (I would have gotten an extra summer point if I had grown the cucumbers myself, but it’s been so darn rainy where I live that my cucumber plants got infected with the ick, so I had to buy some from the farmer’s market). This morning another summer point was achieved as I fired up the BBQ for breakfast (like a boss) and made myself a veggie dog, potatoes, some patty-pan squash (is this what they are called everywhere, or just from the vendor I buy from? Can someone Google that for me?), and a cob of good ol’ Taber corn. Add those to the summer point I got for swimming in a lake earlier this month (generally against my policy because ew leeches), the point I got for watching Whitehorse play an outdoor show in Berlin in 38C heat, and the point I got for attending Interstellar Rodeo, and I’m sitting at a solid 5 points! That’s actually not bad, I guess I did really have a great summer. Can anyone beat this high score?!

THE DEAD SOUTH – MEET “ALABAMA PEOPLE,” NEW SONG FROM SUGAR & JOY. SERVED COLD TOUR COMING TO A CLUB NEAR YOU THIS FALL. FREE SHOW AT ROUGH TRADE IN NYC.

The Dead South have been absolutely smashing out summer points this year, spending the past few months hanging out (and also playing massive sets) at Glastonbury, Red Rocks and headlining the 50th anniversary of their hometown folk festival. I feel like it must be really easy for The Dead South to blend in at festivals since they already wear those wide brim festival hats every day! All they have to do is put on some LED fairy wings or a fun fur tanooki tail, and they can walk around the festival grounds enjoying themselves completely incognito! The Dead South continue to build and build towards the release of Sugar & Joy, their highly anticipated third album, with another new song out now. “Alabama People” is a wild headbanging bluegrass ride (honestly, bluegrass is not that different from tech-y metal), an ode to their experience recording in Sheffield, Alabama (Muscle Shoals region). The Dead South met all kinds of people during these sessions, including late nights spent meeting local legends from bands like The Swampers, while working with producer Jimmy Nutt and assistant engineer Cody Simmons. This song describes a few different traits that you might find in a small sample of people in Alabama (hence the name, I suppose), and I challenge you to guess whomst of the aforementioned influences fall into the different categories of people (who is hungry? Is it Jimmy Nutt?, Who is friendly? Is it the Swampers? Who is lonely? Is it Cody Simmons? Etc.). Send your answers to fakecontestdontactuallysend@thedeadsouth.com

This fall, The Dead South take Sugar & Joy on the road starting with the mystical land of Canada. The Served Cold tour will go coast-to-coast starting in Vancouver. Stay tuned for special news regarding the band’s stop in Toronto on October 31 (I’m guessing the news will be something spooky, but that is entirely speculative). Those in Canada, USA and UK can enter to win VIP ticket packages here.

In the USA, the Served Cold Tour is presented by LiveNation Ones to Watch and SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction, which means you can and should tune in to either Bluegrass Junction Channel 62 (here in Canada) or North Americana Channel 359 to hear “Diamond Ring” in all its glory.

FREE SHOW ALERT: The Dead South will be doing a free in-store on September 24 at Rough Trade Records in Brooklyn. Since the show is freeeee, you can definitely afford to pre-order the album (CD or vinyl) and take home a special signed poster. We hope to see you there! Maybe we can go for pizza after? There will be more news about more free shows this fall coming soon (wink wink Nashville).

RHEOSTATICS SHARE “VANCOUVER,” OPENING TRACK TO HERE COME THE WOLVES. SONIC BOOM IN-STORE ANNOUNCED FOR SEPTEMBER 5, 2019.

It only feels like yesterday we were filming the video for “P.I.N.” and watching the band run on a treadmill...fast forward 15 years (holy heck, seriously?), Rheostatics are in amazing shape and are releasing a new record! It turns out nobody told them that they were allowed to get off the treadmill this whole time! They are coming back with a bang (and absolutely massive quads) with a FREE in-store at Toronto’s Sonic Boom on Sept 5, a day ahead of the release of said new album, Here Come the Wolves. If you would like even further advance warning on the arrival of wolves, you can currently check out three new songs, “Vancouver,” a swirling anthem for west coast skeptics, the canola yellow pop rock of “Rearview” and peak-Rheos multi-part rollercoaster ride, title track “Here Come The Wolves” wherever you stream music. I generally stream music in my house, so that’s where I will be listening.

You still have a few days to enter to win a Rheostatics prize pack with a brand new t-shirt design here.

We’ll be launching another contest soon for all the limited edition vinyl test pressing collectors out there (wow, that’s a very specific group of people), details coming in September.

RIIT DETAILS DEBUT ALBUM COMING OCTOBER 25, NEW SONG “#UVANGATTAU" FEATURING ZAKI IBRAHIM OUT FRIDAY.

We are very excited to announce that Inuktitut electropop songwriter Riit’s debut full-length album ataataga will be out October 25! This record has been a long time in the making, and we are very mega stoked for everyone to finally hear it! Maybe you already checked the song “qaumajuapik,” released in the spring? Of course you did! That lil’ bop will be on the hot new record. In case you somehow missed it, Riit released a video for this track that you can watch here.

Super secret insider scooperz: there’s another new song coming this Friday, “#uvangattau” featuring another one of our amazing pals, Zaki Ibrahim. Other guest vocalists on the record include Elisapie and Josh Q. ataataga includes covers of important Nunavut songwriters, some legit club bangers and a beautiful piano ballad, for a well rounded album listening experience.

Riit has a few shows down south (relatively speaking) this fall, including a stop at Toronto’s VenusFest.

AMELIA CURRAN’S LIVE AT MASSEY HALL COMES TO STREAMING SERVICES. SEPTEMBER MARKS THE 10th ANNIVERSARY OF HUNTER, HUNTER.

If you’ve ever sunk into those plush red seats at Toronto’s Massey Hall and had a truly cinematic experience, you’ll appreciate the hard work the Live at Massey Hall team has been doing to record and share full concert videos of some truly memorable shows. If you haven’t had the pleasure of sinking into said plush red seats, because maybe you don’t live in Toronto, or you don’t get out that way too often, or you do live in Toronto but you have a mild allergy to red plush that you don’t totally feel like aggravating it... well, hopefully you will still get the idea. We are thrilled to announce that we’ll be releasing Amelia Curran’s Live at Massey Hall performance, where she opened for Rheostatics, on all streaming platforms on September 13. It will be almost exactly like being there for realsies, we promise. September 1 marks the 10th anniversary of Hunter, Hunter, (again, holy heck, where does the time go?!) and you’ll find songs from that JUNO winning album and more in this beautiful live recording.

WHITEHORSE WILL RELEASE THE NORTHERN SOUTH VOLS. 1 & 2 AND A WHITEHORSE WINTER CLASSIC ON VINYL. BOTH TITLES COMING TO STORES IN OCTOBER.

We are still reliving the magic of some truly special Whitehorse performances in recent months, including their show with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and their blazing set at Interstellar Rodeo this summer. The duo has also been busy on the road with Sarah McLachlan, playing with symphonies all over Canada and the USA. We are a little worried that they are going to get used to always having a symphony at their side, and that the touring band will grow from 4 people to 94. I mean, that’s cool, but we are gonna need some more Sprinter vans, guys.

This fall, two (well, three, read on) of Whitehorse’s recent albums will be coming to vinyl. The Northern South Vols. 1 & 2 will be packaged together to make one complete (thus far) Northern South collection. A Whitehorse Winter Classic will also be available on vinyl this year (and would make one heck of a winter classic gift, I might add). Spin ‘em right round the year baby, right round, starting October 25.

Whitehorse will be touring Ontario in November, check the tour dates below!

WILLIAM PRINCE RETURNS TO AMERICANAFEST IN NASHVILLE THIS SEPTEMBER.

Did you know that Earthly Days is now available on CD and vinyl via Six Shooter Records (that’s us!)?

The reigning king of our Americana hearts (we have a highly curated selection of hearts), William Prince, will make his return to AmericanaFest in Nashville in September. His official showcase is Thursday, September 12 @ True Music Room, 9pm, and he’ll be playing the Outlaws & Gunslingers luncheon - details in the next section - so I would suggest in a strong but nurturing tone that you do not miss checking one of his performances if you find yourself at the fest. After that, Prince is off to Germany and the UK, where his show at The Slaughtered Lamb is already sold out.

I used to be able to drink so much coffee, but now I feel pretty dang loopy if I have more than two espressos. I just had a third espresso y’all. Watch out. I’m going to start air drumming emphatically to William Prince tunes any second now.

Stay tuned for news about new music later this fall.

OUTLAWS & GUNSLINGERS AT AMERICANAFEST.

This year, the Outlaws & Gunslingers luncheon, presented by Starfish Entertainment and Six Shooter Records, heads to White Avenue Studio. A regular fixture of the AmericanaFest conference, Outlaws & Gunslingers is a midday shindig that guarantees good times and great tunes. This year’s lineup includes country garage songwriter Aubrie Sellers, William Prince (named ’true heir to John Prine’ by NPR Music after last year’s performance) and the return of Elliott Brood's fuzzed up roots.

TANYA TAGAQ NEWS: PAPERBACK + FRENCH EDITIONS COMING THIS FALL.

Tanya Tagaq’s bestselling, award-winning novel Split Tooth arrives in paperback edition in September. That’s in addition to the hardcover version and the audio book narrated by Tagaq herself! Collect ‘em all! The novel is also being translated into French for release in Quebec in October. I’m pretty sure you could take the French version to places other than Quebec if you feel like reading it in French in other locales too. It’s a free country, mon frère. Tagaq will be doing a reading at the University of Toronto as well as giving the Dean’s Lecture at Ontario Tech. Wow, Dean is lucky, private lecture! Oh, did we mention Tagaq will perform at Isabella Rossellini’s farm? True story.

Argh, I was sitting kinda funny for the past 20 minutes or so and my leg fell asleep, and now it is tingling harder than my excitement nerves (those are a thing right?) at a Tanya Tagaq reading.

SIX SHOOTER SILVER SCREEN TIME

With TIFF just around the corner, here are some film syncs we’re super excited about: Tanya Tagaq’s music from her latest release, Toothsayer, will be featured in the Ellen Page-directed documentary entitled There’s Something In The Water, which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Music from Toothsayer will also be heard in a National Geographic documentary called The Last Ice. Not saying, just toothsaying, those placements are making me thirsty for a tall cool glass of icewater! Jenn Grant’s “In The Belly of a Dragon" and “Walk Away” can be heard in the upcoming movie Spinster, starring Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Chelsea Peretti (of whom I am a fan, so yay). And, on the small screen, Tagaq’s song “Snowblind” (again, Toothsayer) will be featured on a late-night Adult Swim show called Off the Air. Turn the antennae (that’s WiFi for old people, kiddos) to catch Amelia Curran’s The Great Escape (from the album Spectators) on CBC’s Heartland. The horn’s been ringing off the hook (ha ha, what? I think this probably means there has been significant demand for film syncs), from territories all over the world, for The Dead South’s In Hell I’ll Be In Good Company, but more on that next month... Until then, I’m gonna go ring some horns of my own! Right off the hook!

WILLIAM PRINCE AND ZAKI IBRAHIM AT REEPERBAHN AND PARIS

Every September, Reeperbahn Festival, Europe’s largest annual music event, takes place in Hamburg, Germany. Reeperbahn has everything we need in life - the worldwide music industry, great music, terrific audiences, German lager, and for those of us who eat sausages... sausages. An incredible buttload of sausages, dangling from a wire rack over an open fire in the middle of the strasse. I have to admit that I don’t personally dig on sausages, but everyone else on the team seems to think those sweaty pink tubes are totally drool worthy, so I figured I better include ‘em anyway. This year at Reeperbahn we are delighted to bring both William Prince and Zaki Ibrahim to Kukuun, a.k.a. Canada Haus, where they will perform for their first time at Reeperbahn as part of the very popular Canadian Blast showcase on September 19th. Look for Six Shooterers Helen Britton, Allison Outhit and Jesse Northey to say hello and grab a drink. Or a sausage, if you are into such cuisine.

Then it’s off to Paris, because that is how we roule. William Prince appears at the Centre Culturel Canadien/Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris on September 20; while Zaki Ibrahim plays the Bastille Sounds Festival on September 21.

ZAKI IBRAHIM CONFIRMED TO PERFORM AT POPMONTREAL.

Speaking of Zaki Ibrahim and French stuff... PopMontreal just revealed their 2019 lineup, which includes Zaki Ibrahim! Woo! Oui! Ibrahim has been bringing the dance moves and R&B grooves to festivals all over Canada this summer, including Interstellar Rodeo where she weathered our usual rain/lightning delays like a true champ and delivered an incredible two-part set.

Title Track “Here Come The Wolves” by Rheostatics on their new album Here Come The Wolves.
