Does every decently sized city in the world have a shirtless guy who cruises around town on rollerblades playing his guitar? I know my city has one, but I kinda feel like it might be a universal experience. I sometimes wonder what it would feel like to be so carefree.
INTERSTELLAR RODEO NEWS YOU CAN USE.
The countdown to Interstellar Rodeo is underway. I mean, really, it has been underway since the festival closed last July, but now the countdown is almost done, um, counting down! Interstellar Rodeo is this freakin’ weekend!! Aaaack! I am so excited, and I am also so busy getting ready! Buying sunscreen (it won’t rain, right?), making a playlist of every song by every artist playing the festival, looking through menus of all the food trucks so I know where to fill mah belly, checking out all the artists and vendors featured in our market (or as we call it, the Mark’t, cuz that’s way more hip, dude. The letter e is so passé), updating the Interstellar App so I have all the latest info... phew, getting ready for Interstellar Rodeo is a full time job!
Just in case you’ve missed some of the updates, there is a lot for you to be excited about with new additions to the festival lineup and new spaces on site. The Deep Dark Woods have been added to Saturday’s lineup! We are thrilled to host our favourite psychedelic folk rockers, who put out a gorgeous new album, Yarrow, last fall. To see the updated Saturday schedule and more, visit: http://interstellarrodeo.com/edmonton/schedule/
This year, iHuman, a local Edmonton youth organization, will be setting up the iHuman Studio in the Mark’t area. The community group will showcase graffiti and beading workshops, break dancing demos and more. Two iHuman members, Jesse Jams and the Flams and Jayden, will also be performing as Interstellar Interludes. We are so excited to share our space with this non-profit group, introduced to us by none other than The Wet Secrets’ Lyle Bell! HeHuman!
Interstellar Rodeo is also excited to introduce the Community Hub, a new way to connect with the artists on stage. We’ve asked this year’s artists to let us know what books, art and more inspire them and their communities, and we’re happy to share their picks with the Interstellar audience. All these great recommends will give you something to do for the rest of the year while you wait for next year’s Interstellar Rodeo!
We are also thrilled about our special design collaboration with local artist Jason Carter. Carter, a member of the Little Red River Cree Nation, is a celebrated sculptor/painter/illustrator whose work has been shown at the Royal Alberta Museum, Art Gallery of Alberta and beyond. Carter has designed a most excellent, limited edition (oooo, exclusive), t-shirt for Interstellar Rodeo 2018! Get a sneak peek of this rad tee over at Interstellar Rodeo’s instagram and get yours at the merch tent! Lol, I just realized that I haven’t been following Interstellar Rodeo on Instagram until now! Whadda dummy! Instastellargram, you are now my friendo. Follow Interstellar Rodeo on Instagram here.
Congratulations to the lucky winners who will be joining The Dead South and July Talk for this year’s Backstage with Bands and Big Rock contest! Triple B! I love alliteration! We’ll be seeing you soon. I wonder if it’s kinda weird for artists when someone wins a contest to hang out with them? I actually know the answer to this... of course not! All artists are extroverts who want to make friends!!
We’ll be sending out a Tricks & Tips blast to all festival ticket buyers in a few days. Get your tix today if you haven’t already done so...they are moving fast!
PRE-PARTY WITH US AT THIS THURSDAY AT THE NORTHERN RODEO.
For anyone looking for a pre-festival party (that’s you, party animal), we strongly encourage you to join us for the first ever Northern Rodeo on Thursday, July 19 at The Starlite. Northern Rodeo is a special show featuring The Jerry Cans, Riit and Josh Q. Top tip: this show will be very very good. Riit and Josh Q are also performing Interstellar Interludes this year. Get your Northern Rodeo tickets here - https://www.starliteroom.ca/event/1721524-northern-rodeo-jerry-cans-edmonton/
WHITEHORSE MAKES FRIENDS.
We are still processing the awesomeness of Whitehorse at Massey Hall’s anniversary celebration, where they performed as house band with an incredible list of artists - Peter and Leah from July Talk, Joel Plaskett, Sarah Harmer, Sam Roberts, Jim Cuddy and Buffy Sainte-Marie. I’ve made a fairly large Venn diagram on the wall of my bedroom to help me process the stimuli I was dealt at this concert event, and I have calculator apps open on both my computer and my smartphone to help with the complicated equations in determining just how many levels of awesomeness were achieved. We’re still thinking about their performance of “Lodestar” with Sarah Harmer which, using an abacus to count the number of times my jaw dropped, I have determined was a total showstopper. Whitehorse has also recently been spotted performing alongside Sarah McLachlan and Blue Rodeo, bringing the total number of other artists’ songs this tireless team has learned in recent months to nearly 100. I only needed one calculator to figure out that is exactly 100 more songs than I have learned in recent months, so I am very impressed by this stat. If you follow Whitehorse on Instagram, you know they have been in the studio quite a lot lately too! Get ready for new music this fall. Follow them here.

WHITNEY ROSE BOWLING CONTEST + SONGS ON THE RANCH.
Road spirit/true grit Whitney Rose continues to bowl on down the highway lanes of North America, scoring turkeys and 4 baggers at every show. Ha ha, I’m so bad at bowling puns. But hey, if, like Whitney, you happen to be a fan of classic bowling alleys and frothy cold beverages, you should enter to win a chance to meet up with Whitney on tour for a frame or two! Rose Bowl! Not to be confused with the stadium in Pasadena, or the defunct Edmonton pizza joint. Enter to win a chance to go bowling with Whitney here: https://show.co/fpLpccy
If you can’t catch a live show, you can also check out Season 3 of Netflix’s The Ranch, where two of Whitney’s songs are currently featured (watching a TV show is probably the best, most convenient way to listen to songs you wanna hear). Check out Whitney’s scathing (but also kinda blasé) take on division of assets, “I Don’t Want Half (I Just Want Out),” in Episode 301 or South Texas Suite’s soaring countrified girl group vibes “Bluebonnets for My Baby” on Ep 303.
THE DEAD SOUTH'S TICKET SALES, NEW VIDEO FOR MISS MARY.
Which band from Regina has already sold nearly 5,000 tickets for their February 2019 UK tour? Oh, probably the same one that has close to 100 million views across their various videos on YouTube (it might actually be more than 100 million, I can’t count that high). That would be The Dead South, recently seen on Parliament Hill on July 1, Red River
Ex, and soon to be on stage at our cool festival Interstellar Rodeo! I have absolutely no idea what I am doing in February yet, so I am very impressed by the foresight of The Dead South’s UK fans. The Dead South also have a new macabre puppet video for “Miss Mary” (which makes sense since the song is a wee bit murder-y), and a huge North American tour planned for November. Watch the new video:
THE JERRY CANS HAVE A NEW SONG FOR YOU.
One of the newest additions to Six Shooter’s artist management roster (which we are very stoked about, btw), Iqaluit’s The Jerry Cans, have a new song out in advance of their appearance at Northern Rodeo, our special Interstellar Rodeo pre-party this Thursday! Listen to the fuzzed out rocker “Ilinnut” here, and be prepared to have it stuck in your head for the rest of life, it’s a wee bit of an earworm - https://AakulukMusic.lnk.to/Ilinnut
ACCIDENCE WORLDWIDE
Where in the world can you see Accidence happen today? This short film, with music composed by our very own Ensign Broderick and directed by total legend Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, continues to travel to film festivals all over the globe, from Hong Kong to Finland to Cannes (that’s a big ol’ chunk of globe right there). Stay tuned for news about Accidence’s North American premiere, which will be happening soon.
Congratulations are also in order for Guy Maddin, who will be receiving The Alda Award at this year’s Gimli Film Festival in recognition of his truly outstanding career and continually pressing the bounds of the art of cinema since he released Tales from the Gimli Hospital in 1988! Read more about it here - http://gimlifilm.com/awards-contests/
Remember when we released four Ensign Broderick albums this year? That was so sick dude.
