Are you having a super spooky Halloween? One of my good friends absolutely hates Halloween, can you believe that?! He also really hates being teased about hating Halloween. Every year I suggest that he should dress up as a Smurf (because I think that is pretty much the funniest costume for someone who hates Halloween. You really have to commit to being a Smurf), and every year that suggestion is met with a grand total of zero lolz whatsoever. Oh well! I can admit that my Halloween spirit has waned a bit in recent years. For instance, this is the third year in a row that I have opted to dress up as my dog dressed up as a sailor (my dog just dresses up as a sailor, since he is already my dog). And the first thing I thought when I saw pumpkins at the supermarket this year was “oh wow, I bet I could make a nice blended soup with those and a bit of coconut milk” rather than “I shall have the spookiest jack-o-lantern in all the spooky land!” Am I less fun than I used to be? Please don’t answer that, it’s rhetorical. My pumpkin soup was totally bangin’, btw.
YARROW BY THE DEEP DARK WOODS
Prairie folk murder balladeers The Deep Dark Woods are officially back, and their beautiful new album, Yarrow is out now! Things I know about the word yarrow include that it is a flowering herb of some sort (that possibly relieves toothaches if you chew on it), and, of course, my favourite factoid about yarrow is that if you mix it with wed you get owwange.
Yarrow is the first album The Deep Dark Woods has blessed us with since 2013, and oh man it’s a doozy. I mean doozy in a good way of course, like “that album got me mad doozed with it’s beauty, bruh”. A common phrase to hear from young music fans as they listen to beautiful new albums. Yarrow is immersive, intimate, and mesmerizing, and perhaps even a little bit spooky, which works well for this spookiest of all seasons. It was worth the wait!
Press response to this album has already been phenomenal, both domestically and abroad with Exclaim claiming “Another 500 glowing words could be written about Yarrow and still not do it justice.”, and UK mag Uncut giving a solid 8/10 to the collection they describe as “Measured, painfully beautiful folk noir.”
The album is climbing the Americana Radio chart, snagging the coveted “#1 MOST ADDED at Americana Radio” spot upon release. The band’s Canadian tour continues this fall, moving east towards Quebec and ending back in Ontario (see TOUR DATES below). Plus, keep your eyes peeled for a US tour in early 2018, to be followed by extensive travel through UK and Europe in the spring.
WHITNEY ROSE'S RULE 62 IS A HIT
We’re so pleased with all of the great radio support, great press, and great shows around Whitney Rose’s great new album, Rule 62. That’s a whole lotta great! Tune in to Americana radio stations, SiriusXM Outlaw Country and SiriusXM Country (Canada) to hear choice cuts from the new album.
Whitney Rose has hit the open road in support of Rule 62. She will be performing with Grammy anointed Tex-Mex country rock band The Mavericks, a band that includes Rule 62’s producer Raul Malo, at a slew of Canadian dates this fall. Her tour continues through Canada and the US, and will hit Europe and the UK early next year.
WHITEHORSE ON TOUR NOW + NEW VIDEO FOR "PINK KIMONO"
I recently fell off my bicycle and broke a stinkin’ rib, and you know what? It sucked! What a shocker! I wound up having to sleep sitting up on my sofa with an airplane neck pillow for 5 straight weeks, which drove me half way to looney town. I also watched every single show on Netflix and don’t remember what any of them were about. But guess what?! My first real moment of being able to get out and enjoy life again was going to see Whitehorse perform as a full rocking band, and I could instantly feel my bones fusing back together and my spirits lifting. And I remember that! Thanks Whitehorse!
Now that they have graciously healed me, Whitehorse’s Panther In The Dollhouse North American tour rolls on with sweaty full band rock shows in Canada and sizzling guitar slinging duo shows in the United States.
We’ve teamed up with our friends from Big Rock Brewery to bring you our special VIP Wheat & Greets, special pre-show backstage events where a small number of people are being treated to an intimate acoustic performance from Luke and Melissa, a signed CD and digital copy of Panther in the Dollhouse, and an exclusive VIP shirt which will ensure that you are treated like the VIP you are in any situation. I would expect there is also beer involved, quite likely wheat beer (allow us to remind you that Big Rock brewed a lovely Belgian style Wit in collaboration with Whitehorse back in April). Today I read a thingy that listed “19 types of beer snobs”, and I only qualified for 2 out of the 19, which isn’t really that bad. Get your Wheat & Greet tickets here.
Whitehorse recently released a new video for the steamy arena rocker “Pink Kimono,” that is one part wholesome Brady Bunch and one part dirty dream. If you are still looking for a super duper last minute Halloween costume, may I suggest “my baby mama in a pink kimono”, or perhaps even “one part brady bunch, one part dirty dream”. It might take a bit of explaining when you are trick or treating, but what good costume doesn’t? The video was filmed in Edmonton with about a billion (estimated) 8mm cameras and directed by Katrina Beatty. “Make love/not war,” Huffington Post wrote, “as bright and suggestive as the song title implies, with vivid makeout sessions involving twosomes and threesomes who could inspire another movement that’s in need of a serious reboot during these troubled times.”
SIX SHOOTER TORONTO SHOW BONANZA
Six Shooter artists are treating Toronto to a packed fall show schedule. If you don’t already live in Toronto, you may want to consider a temporary residency here. Catch one (or many) of our artists, starting this week:
Tanya Tagaq, Trinity-St. Paul, Nov 1 (filmed live by the NFB for an upcoming project)
Amelia Curran, Gladstone Hotel, Nov 2
The Deep Dark Woods, Longboat Hall, Nov 3
Whitney Rose, Phoenix Concert Theatre w/ The Mavericks, November 3
The Rheostatics with Ensign Broderick – Dec 7, 8, 9 @ The Horseshoe
Whitehorse, Massey Hall, Dec 8
Contest time! WOO! Take a selfie of yourself (that’s why it’s called a selfie, duh) at as many of the above listed shows as you can, and post them to the popular social media platform Instagram using the hashtag #SixShooterTakesToronto. Following the Whitehorse show at Massey Hall, we will have some poor sap in the office calculate who attended the most shows, and that person WINS. The winner not only will have already won the prize of enjoying many fine concert experiences, but will also be able to choose an item of their liking from our new super exclusive Aficionada web store (more on that in a sec). If you don’t use Instagram you can snail-mail us polaroid selfies, but if they don’t get here in time, tough luck. In the event of a tie, everyone gets free stuff. Sound cool? YA IT DOES.
TANYA TAGAQ TAKES NYC BY STORM
Tanya Tagaq heads to New York City for a special show in support of the UN Pathway to Paris climate change action initiative at Carnegie Hall on November 5, performing on a bill that includes Patti Smith, Michael Stipe, Cat Power, Talib Kweli and others. Um. That is pretty huge lineup, and a pretty important cause. I’m sure it will also make for one hell of a show! Massive respect to Tanya Tagaq and all the other artists involved for taking a stand!
And that’s not all, she’ll be back in the Big Apple in December for multiple performances with a variety of incredible artistic collaborators at National Sawdust (the coolest venue on earth), as part of their “Winterreise Nights” series. Collaborators include violinist Laura Ortman and cellist Jeffrey Ziegler. Curious minds would do well to click here to see what’s in store.
AFICIONADA, YOUR EXCLUSIVE HOLIDAY SHOPPING STOP
I truly love buying gifts for people, it’s one of the best feelings ever when you give someone you care about a perfect and special gift, and you aren’t met with the dreaded “present face”. With that sentiment in mind, we have your holiday shopping covered this year, with Aficionada, our brand new music-minded line of specialty merch. Aficionada is our way of merging our love of music with our love of art (and a little bit of our love of smashing the patriarchy). This holiday season, check out these items as the perfect gift for your hard-to- shop-for loved ones:
Whitehorse canvas print signed by political cartoonist David Parkins (you’ve seen his work in the Globe & Mail)
Tanya Tagaq seal skin cuffs made by Snowfly (the same ones worn at the now historic Polaris Music Prize performance in 2014)
Whitney Rose print satin-charmeuse scarf (Bobbie Gentry meets Francois Hardy)
The Deep Dark Wood..en Spoons, complete with Ryan’s grandmother’s Zuma Borscht recipe (no beets! yes sausage!)
Each of these items is bundled with their respective album; your choice of CD or vinyl. The CD player in my car recently stopped working, so I’m personally going with vinyl. I mean, I don’t have a turntable in my car either, but vinyl is my preferred format to listen to at home. Isn’t it nice to have the choice? Visit our Aficionada store here.
