INTERGALACTIC BLUES GROOVES:

WHITEHORSE ANNOUNCES NEW EP, THE NORTHERN SOUTH VOL. 1.

Put on your cobra snake necktie, it’s time for The Northern South Vol. 1, a new EP from space cowboy duo Whitehorse. Whitehorse inhabits the kitchens and Cadillacs of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf and others in an homage to one of the most important addresses in music, 2120 S. Michigan Avenue circa 1960, and the astonishing catalogues of Chess and Checker Records. The Northern South Vol. 1 looks to the time after the Great Migration brought so many soon-to-be music legends north to Chicago to plug in.

From the chunky, harmonica-singed ain’t-gonna-stand-for-it romance of “My Babe” to a modern rewrite of “Pretty Thing” – the wedding ring is now coming off, not on – The Northern South Vol. 1 shakes loose grooves and melodies, shakes off the Blueshammer stigma that comes with the territory, and shakes, as in shimmies, with six new songs that showcase Whitehorse’s formidable guitar prowess.

The EP has sharpened Whitehorse’s own sense of sound and mission, a fusion of pre- Beatles American electric fuzzed up, processed and distorted by pedals, telephones and layers of banged-about bits. Whitehorse’s M.O. is one part clockmaker’s precision, one part unchecked hurricane. So much of the duo’s identity is strung over frets, tightened by pegs, and sent screaming through amps – The Northern South Vol. 1 is a one-way ticket to Guitarland.

The Northern South Vol. 1 will be released May 6, 2016 on Six Shooter Records (distributed by Thirty Tigers).

To mark the release, Whitehorse will take The Northern South on a 'Northern Route' tour that rightfully includes a stop in Chicago, the origin of so much of the music on the EP.

ABOUT WHITEHORSE:

“To this band from the Great White North, the sound of the American Southwest feels like home.” – WSJ Speakeasy

“A depth of musicianship and songcraft that makes some genre-mates seem like slackers.” – Guitar Player

“Superduo whose music swirls together the swampy swagger of the Bible Belt, the minor- key melancholy of film noir soundtracks and the raw stomp of rock & roll.” – Rolling Stone

Whitehorse is a roots noir duo with an innovative approach and intense chemistry. Together, Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland defy the math of one plus one with a big sound based on layers of live looping. Their desert surf sensibility is distinguished by guitar wizadry and magnetic harmonies. Whitehorse’s debut album, The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss showcased psychedelic-meets-Spaghetti Western scorchers, sparkling acoustic ballads and pop noir numbers. The follow-up, Leave No Bridge Unburned, is similarly dramatic in tenor, offering a bigger, bolder rock sound with songs that further develop their ‘space cowboy’ take on southwestern rock. Now, the band goes back to the roots of rock n’ roll with The Northern South, Vol. 1, which showcases the band’s signature blistering riffs and searing harmonies in modern translations of the grooves and melodies of 1950s and 1960s blues selections.
