SIX SHOOTER SIGNS THE DEEP DARK WOODS

We're proud to announce that The Deep Dark Woods will release their third full-length record, The Place I Left Behind, on August 2, 2011 on Six Shooter Records. Yayee! A follow-up to 2009's deep dark dirge, the award-winning Winter Hours, the new album is the band's first self-produced project. The Place I Left Behind is a fine collection of songcraft that offers murder ballads alongside scrappy rockers, lovesick hymnals and slow-dance waltzes that preserve the shadowy corners of folk music traditions. Based in Saskatchewan, the Deep Dark Woods sport a varying degree of unshaven faces planted on top of the shoulders of: Burke Barlow, Ryan Boldt, Lucas Goetz, Geoff Hilhorst, and Chris Mason. The album comes out the week they hit the Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

SIX SHOOTER SIGNS WAGONS

More hot fun for Six Shooter Records this summertime, with new additions to the roster from here, there and even other hemispheres. Rolling in from Melbourne, Australia is Wagons, a band with a wild-eyed, audience-taunting frontman (ie. a regular Australian), Henry Wagons, and an instrument-swapping set of musicians who keep the shows just on this side of sanity. Wagons blew everyone away at CMW + SXSW (their first full-band appearance at both festivals), and Six Shooter signed up to release their brand new record, Rumble, Shake and Tumble on August 16, 2011. We are told that this disc will spin in the opposite direction from our other releases, due to it's other-hemispherocity. Wagons’ full back catalogue will also be available from Six Shooter in digital form. A simultaneous US release of the album will drop via Thirty Tigers (the label, not some Vegas show involving 30 tigers).

JENN GRANT MEETS THE ROYALS

Much ado has been made of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visiting our fair country, a visit covered by no fewer than 1300 media types, and lemme tell ya, that ain't nothing! Shakespeare joke! Humour fit for Royals! Our very own Jenn Grant slammed back some royal jelly shots, donned her Royal Elastics sneakers, and had the honour and pleasure of performing for William and Kate! Plus she got to meet them, and apparently had to dodge a blitzkrieg! We asked Jenn about this, and here’s what she had to say:

"Hello everyone! Well, as you know, I just got back from my rendezvous with the Royal Couple. I did not get to smell Prince William, I just got to look at him. Although I think if I smelled him, he would have smelled pretty good. The tabloids have not done him justice. He's just a prince. A charmer in every way. He told me I was "Too Talented". Yes, Six Shooter, you can add that to my website.

"And Kate, my goodness. She is fit as a fiddle. I don't know what work out program she's in but she's looking good and I'd love to join her!

"Right before the Jenny G band and I played for them, there were many gunshots fired, and many fighter jets flying just overhead! It was a wild time. Thank goodness we got our getcha goods together and rocked the town. And yes, I believe Kate and I have a psychic connection because our outfits matched, twice. All in all it was a day and night to remember. All hail the Queen!"

POLARIS LOVE FOR BOTH JENN GRANT and LUKE DOUCET & THE WHITE FALCON

We were very pleased when we found out that the one kabillion jurors for the Polaris Long List have included two Six Shooter albums in the mix: "Honeymoon Punch" by Jenn Grant, and "Steel City Trawler" by Luke Doucet & the White Falcon. Yay, us! When I first saw the list, I was so excited that I texted Luke Doucet a lil' message along the lines of "OMG Polaris Long List! YGG! IMHO u Rock! ROTFLOL!", and I was kind of offended when he didn't even reply! Has Polaris Long List fame already gone to Luke's forever-young blonde head?! I was so disheartened that I didn't even bother texting Jenn Grant (that, and I don't have her digits). Anyway, this is our last chance to brag about our Polaris goodness, because they are announcing the short list imminently. Maybe even today. So say three cheers for us while the going is good!

LUKE DOUCET ANNOUNCES CANADIAN TOUR DATES

Don't miss Luke and his awesome band the White Falcon this summer! It has just occurred to me that Luke should probably dress up as Falco for Halloween this year. Mostly because my mind works on Cockney logic, and Falco sounds kind of like Falcon to me, and every time I read the name of Luke’s band, ‘Rock Me Amadeus’ gets stuck in my head. That’s a pretty sweet tune, so I don’t mind. In addition to a number of exciting festival plays, El Dee and the Double You Eff are also performing at a number of clubs. Notably in Wakefield, Edmonton, and Calgary. Details below.

SUMMER FESTIVAL RECAP

With just a few festivals under our belt, there is already lots to report, what with Jenn Grant meeting the Royals (as reported above, they are both very fancy, and apparently quite fit in the athletic sense, not the British, "whoa that bird is FIT" sense), Sarah McLachlan joining the White Falcon’s set at the Burlington Sound of Music festival (although we do wish Sarah had worn shredded, acid washed jeans to match with the White Falcon's rockin' intensity), and Shout Out Out Out Out proving that they can still pull off that whole "youthful zest" thing by playing the Boonstock Festival in Gibbons, AB with a 3 AM set time!!

The summer is still young, however, and there is much, much more festival action coming up. Since Trampled by Turtle's release of Palomino on May 10, 2011, the black-and-bluegrass quintet logged a sold-out CD Release Show in Vancouver and will soon be on stages at the Winnipeg Folk Festival and Ottawa Blues Fest, all of which adds up to a decidedly non-shabby way to introduce themselves to us friendly Canadians. Also this coming weekend in Winnipeg, watch for Melissa McClelland, who in addition to playing her own mainstage concert set (we’re hoping for hella pyrotechnics), will be joining Blue Rodeo for their live presentation of the album, "Five Days in July", which may actually take 5 days, so bring a tent, saltines, and some bottled water.

Across the Lakes, we have the Beauties and Amelia Curran both performing at the Mariposa Folk Festival. We'll all be there, working on our suntans and drinking from our environmentally friendly cups (made from empty poutine containers salvaged from under my car seat). We hope to see you out there, too... check out the Six Shooter Records + Management festival schedule this summer, and start planning your roadtrips:
