Wow, the past few days have sure crazy in the ol' headlines, huh? Osama peaced out, Canada had a big, intense, election, and I just found out today that Vin Diesel used to be a rapper. The world continues to be a big and scary place. Luckily I just got a new doggie who is helping me to forget about the nastier bits of news (today he got startled by a wild bunny while he was poopin', and believe me, it was heeeelarious), a poutine shop opened less than a block from my house, and I live in a riding that voted orange, so yeah, I’m still pretty stoked on life right now.
TRAMPLED BY TURTLES
Six Shooter Records welcomes Palomino to the stable... get it? Horse joke! Palomino is the new album by Duluth's Trampled by Turtles, and it will be released on Six Shooter on May 10, 2011!
Trampled By Turtles is Dave Simonett (vocals, guitar), Tim Saxhaug (bass, vocals), Dave Carroll (banjo, vocals), Erik Berry (mandolin, vocals) and Ryan Young (fiddle). Lemme tell ya, these guys can really rip. Some of the songs on Palomino are so insanely fast that it makes the Finnish heavy metal bands I saw last month sound like the Cocteau Twins. My initial reaction on hearing Palomino was something along the lines of "More like Trampled By Freakin' Gazelles brah"! Their 'eve chunes are a hybrid of classic songwriting, bluegrass and folk - or as they put it, North Country & Mid-Western Blue-collar 'grass with a fistful of gunpowder. On top of the absolutely blazing mandolin and banjo fervor sits a poignant, seductive desolation that calls to mind contemporaries Avett Brothers, Blitzen Trapper and Elliott BROOD. Produced by lead singer, guitarist and primary songwriter Dave Simonett, Palomino leads off with a pair of plaintive, up-tempo (like, really uptempo) ballads. Wait So Long offers gorgeous, high lonesome harmonies by bassist Tim Saxhaug and banjoist Dave Carroll, as well as a video seen by nearly 700,000 youtube viewers. Check it out below and help 'em hit a milli.
Trampled By Turtles is also known for their runaway train performances, frenzied ever-accelerating sets that have made their name across America. At this year's SXSW, the band grabbed attention from NPR, American Songwriter and Esquire Magazine. The Minnesotans brought their "raucous stomp" to Coachella, and are also confirmed to play the renowned Newport Folk Music Festival this summer. Quoth Atlanta rapper T.I., "big shit poplin'" (although, I'm not entirely sure that he was referring to Trampled By Turtles, but it still applies). Palomino, which topped the Billboard Bluegrass chart in 2010, is the band's fifth studio recording, and first released in Canada. Six Shooter is very proud to be bringing Palomino to the land of the endless Harper (we're proud of the Palomino part, not the Harper part, just to be clear).
Vancouver folks are the first to get a taste of the Turtle at their upcoming show at the Media Club on May 14. Other upcoming Canadian festivals include Winnipeg Folk Festival and Ottawa Bluesfest.
BEAUTIES IN OTTAWA
Those living in the nation's capital can get a taste of what Toronto's Sunday-nighters have been loving for ages now. Starting tomorrow, The Beauties will perform a weekly Thursday night residency at the Elmdale Tavern for the month of May. Clearly, the Beauties have a real thing for residencies, having just done a Residency at Piano's in NYC as well. So, Ottawanians, grab yourself a few slices of pizza with gravy on it (I have it on good authority that they have this in Ottawa, sounds kinda gross to me), and settle in for the month! Don’t miss a single Sunday, or else!
In more Beauties' news, check the tour dates section for some dates with one of our fave bands south of the border, the Drive by Truckers. Also check out how they are playing two different slots at Hillside Festival this year, one with Serena Ryder, and the other with Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene.

AMELIA CURRAN HEADS WEST
Amelia Curran has been a real busy bee lately! She just finished kicking out the jams at a bunch of ECMA performances, she won a Juno Award, and also held it down at JunoFest, co-anchoring, alongside Peter Mansbridge, the TIFF Lightbox presentation of the Leonard Cohen film I'm Your Man. Amelia's song The Mistress off of Hunter, Hunter, has been the recipient of even more accolades, receiving First Prize in the USA Songwriting Competition in the Folk category! Woo, that's what's up! Amelia also recently recorded with Quebec singer-songwriter Caracol for a special CBC series Rendez-Vous, which features collaborations between Anglo and Francophone artists. The Amelia Curran/Caracol performance airs May 12 on CBC Radio 12.
Up next for Amelia is a show at Jane Bond in Waterloo, after which she hops on a plane and heads west for a string of dates with fellow Haligonian Erin Costello. This was very challenging to set up because neither Amelia nor Erin uses email, they both prefer to communicate using the Hali-Fax machine! Haw haw!!! Check tour dates for more details and ticket links. After this tour, Amelia heads straight into the studio to start working on the follow up album to Hunter, Hunter, which I personally really hope is titled Gatherer, Gatherer.
GOOD LOVELIES IN UK, WILL NOT BE UPSTAGED BY PIPPA
Did you know that in Australia CDs spin in the opposite direction? Fun fact! Or wait, maybe that's toilet water. I guess we'll have to double check on that one with the Good Lovelies, who have just returned from an incredibly successful tour down under, where our girls sold every last CD they brought... including the mistaken shipment where we accidently sent them too many, and the emergency shipment halfway through the tour when they had already run out. Now that the Good Lovelies are back from Oz, they are readying themselves for another debut tour overseas, this time to the UK, where they plan to hold Royal Weddings on every night of the tour, that's gotta be good for CD sales right? Pippa Middleton is totally not on the guestlist for any of the shows though, unless she agrees to wear a potato sack. Check tour dates below
LUKE DOUCET + MUSIC MONDAY
Y'know that part of the day when you've already had two giant mugs of strong black coffee, and you know that you shouldn't cross the line and have one more, but it tastes so good that you get up and stoke the ol' espresso machine that you got used for 20 bucks at Value Village with another hit, and then you are screwed for the rest of the day? Story of my life, bro! I am about to cross that line right now, and clearly I know that I shouldn’t! What is wrong with me? The rest of my day is gonna suuuuuuck. You know who doesn't have this problem? Luke Doucet, that's who. Luke is a real smarty pants, and hasn't touched that nasty caffeine stuff in years. You would think that this would result in Luke having a permanent case of the Mondays, but nope, he was bright eyed and bushy tailed in Winnipeg on Monday to help the Coalition for Music Education promote "Music Monday". More than 1700 schools across the country learned the song Luke wrote specifically for the campaign, titled Tomorrow is Coming (and if Rebecca Black has taught Luke anything, then I'm guessing the song is about Tuesday).
Haligonians can check out Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland performing a make-up date (meaning, a show that had to be scheduled and not that they are going to be doing any kissing and making up on stage) at the Company House on May 20. Luke is taking advantage of the fact that he'll be in Halifax that weekend, where he's going to run his second marathon. Go Luke!
