LUKE TOURS WILLY NILLY IN THE USA
Luke Doucet and his purdy White Falcon Gretsch are on the road with Willy Porter throughout November in the USA. Check out youtube for some amazing (and very educational) guitar lessons. Even the Huffington Post is catching wind (get that one? It's a joke about the huffy-puffy movement of air, duuuude). Check this for some embedded video action (you have to scroll down a bit, but just watch for the little video box that has Luke's flip-a-doodle haircut and a shiny guitar in it). www.huffingtonpost.com. Or better yet, check them all out pon da youtubes below.
I'm not much of a git-fiddle player, so a lot of that stuff Luke is saying just flies over my head, but y'know, I bet when the Huffington Post embeds my virtuosic newsletter-writing video, it'll fly over his head too! So there! Take that, Mr. Expert-In-His-Field-Doucet!
SIX SHOOTER HITS THE PIONEER TRAIL
Everyone at Six Shooter seems to be making like geese (or whatever) and heading west (even the office! See below). Justin Rutledge and Melissa McClelland bring the croon and the swoon across the west on a killer double bill that hits Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Winnipeg before bringing it back to Ontario later this month. Justin heads out on the road after a three-week stint rehearsing with noted author Michael Ondaatje, theatre director extraordinaire Daniel Brooks, and a group of very fine actors to workshop the eventual stage production based on their collaboration, entitled "When my name was Anna." And guess what, we just heard that Melissa was nominated for some Hamilton Music Awards (Female Artist, Female Vocalist, and Adult Alternative Album), how fun is that? Anyway, this is an awesome double bill you are not going to want to miss.
To all those Albertans reading this...just a little note to say that the masterful guitar player, gifted storyteller, lyricist and celebrated author, Dave Bidini will be out your way at the end of the month. No big deal or anything. Just that Dave started the best band ever - a little band called The Rheostatics! He also launched a lauded solo disc this June with his aptly named Bidiniband (in my head, I like to say Bidini-inininiband, and I won't be offended if you do that too. It's cool, mi intellectual property es su intellectual property, know what I'm sayin'?), called "The Land is Wild", founded the Hoser March, wrote his billionth bitchin' book, saved the Great Lakes, got involved with The Homeless Soccer League, sent his managers flowers (this does not mean that he is a brown noser, but rather a sweet gent), and took his kids trick-or-treating (and checked the apples for razor blades... do creeps still do that, or is Halloween strictly now on some kind of Twilight/Digimon tip these days?). Yeah, he's pretty much the greatest everrrr, but "this is how we like to rock", quoth the Bidini. Bidiniband will be in Edmonton, Calgary and Banff to kick your prairie dwelling asses (or Rocky Mountain dwelling asses, in the case of the Banff-ers) into high gear! It seems like only yesterday that I noticed that Banff now was "street view" available on google maps... oh wait, yeah, that was yesterday. See the details and dates in our tour date section belowski.
Royal Wood is also showing us a thing or two about how to pack a suitcase this month. Make sure you bring enough socks so that you don't have to do laundry until after the tour (it's cool if everything else stinks, but not the socks), and if you have the foresight and patience to roll up all your shirts into lil' jelly-rolls, then you can totally fit more of them into that wheelie bag. Royal started the tour that never ends last week (it's the tour equivalent of the 'it's a small world after all' Disneyland "ride") when he set off for Canada's loverly East Coast to tour with the delightfully aromatic Rose Cousins. We heard that the cheers at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium in Halifax on Sunday were so loud that they could only be surpassed by the swooning at The Company House on Halloween night when Royal donned his Mad Men costume (he went as an ashtray) and rocked the keys for a benefit show for awesomeness. Handsome and generous and talented, that's what we call a triple whammy (on account of there being three worthwhile whammies involved)! Ahem, anyway, the tour is going smashingly smashing (as Helen likes to say as she sips a crisp pint of bittah). Just as soon as Royal gets used to Atlantic Time, he'll switch up for Pacific when he jets off to LA to play 5 shows in 3 days, while still finding time to slash some waves at Malibu beach. Hang ten brah! Best place to catch him is at The Hotel Cafe on Wednesday, November 11 at 7 pm. Then while you're napping or baking pies, in the shape of your post-show aura, by the dwindling light, Royal will be flying out to Vancouver on November 17 for the start of his Western tour. And because Rose was such a lovely hostess on the Eastern seaboard, Royal will host her during the 10 day haul. Check out tour dates below for all the truly glamorous details, such as the opulent cities, dates and venues.
Amelia Curran is opening for a band we heart big time (like, biiiiig tiiiiime), The Skydiggers, all over the place. Not just Wakefield (this weekend) and Kingston, but Edmonton, Calgary, and Winnipeg, too. Would you be remotely surprised if I said that you can see below for details? I didn’t think so, and that's one of the top 5 reasons why I love you (for the other 4 reasons, send cash). If you’re anywhere west of EST, check the dates, because the chances are that there will be a Six Shooter in your town soon, and they could probably use a drink.
HAWKSLEY WORKMAN'S USA DEBUT
Only Hawksley could pull off a debut 10 albums deep into his career (which, of course, is already a crazy accomplishment). For Him and the Girls, Hawksley's yodelly, spidery, world war-y, kind of pervy, grand spectacular spectacle of a first release is finally out in the USA. Just in time, too, because those new Volvo owners who went out and bought their fancy new cars after hearing "Safe and Sound" on the teevee need something to put in their stereos other than the Crazy Frog version of Axel F (which is undeniably sweeeet, but doesn't have the same impact without the cutting edge animation). For Him and the Girls was just too good to keep as our own national secret, so Americans can buy it for themselves on November 17, and proceed to bug out and "do the Hawksley".
SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT GET A SIDEKICK FROM SPIN MAGAZINE
S04 tours are so much fun, what will all the roadside stops and multi-day long drives, that they thought they'd bring a total stranger on board the big blue van. Well, ok, they didn't make him endure the pain of sitting for hours on end amongst 7 smelly and road worn dudes in the back of a van with no heat, but SPIN Magazine did indeed send one eager fan on the road as the official correspondent of the recently-wrapped Shout Out tour. You can read all about life as a temporary Shoutsetter here: www.spin.com
OH, and if you haven't seen the newest tour diaries on GravyTV, watch them here: www.youtube.com
Jam packed adventures that alternate between the tedium of driving across the nation, the decidedly bizarre, and the totally hilarious, with plenty of "Ziggies" and cutting edge video editing thrown in for good measure! Gravy's tour videos provide a pretty clear picture of what a day in the life of Shout Out Out Out Out entails!
SIX SHOOTER LOVES CHANDELIERS, LARGE OPEN WORK SPACES, AND QUEEN + SPADINA
We mooooved!!! Six Shooter Records' glorious new headquarters is up and running. It's so big! It's so downtown! We have chandeliers! Not that we want to brag...but it's pretty spectacular! Yes, there are still boxes everywhere, but we're in! We're still working on sampling all the local lunch options (we're gonna make a heavy food-based dubstep album, it'll blow your miiinds). Send us your suggestions for best sandwich place in the neighbourhood. We'll try them all. At once. As a giant ass dagwood. We'll even lace it with tater chips. Bring it on.
SIX SHOOTER MAKES A PLAYLIST
We're learning how to use the interweb! So far we have both Hamster Dance and Friendster FULLY DIALED. We wanna step up our cyber game, so send us your favourite playlists and we'll heart them on the official home of Six Shooter Records on CBC Radio 3's fancy new site (or "web blammo" as the kids undoubtedly call 'em these days). Listen to our first ever playlist of Six Shooter's November touring artists and send us your playlists too (you better put some rap in there... and some grindcore). We can do a sharesies, and it'll make us better friendsies.
ELLIOTT BROOD NAILS IT
Breaking news: Elliott BROOD crack the Americana chart in the US! Booyah!!! Mountain Meadows made its Americana debut at #38, completely putting #39 to shame. The band has been touring the pinstripes off their suits all over the south, and their hard work is paying off (and not just in the form of a new "suit look"). The band sauntered into Austin TV while in Texas - check out their live performance here: www.youtube.com. The BROOD is also racking up an impressive press kit (because, y'know, us industry types just love press kits and always look at them to determine the merit of an artist), with killer reviews in the Onion, MOJO and Utne. More dates stateside happen later this month with Heavy Trash.
NEW VIDEOS
When she wrote "You'll Go Far", Jenn Grant never imagined that it would actually apply to herself in the making of a new video. Icebergs make for surprisingly elusive prey, but Jenn and director Drew Lightfoot turned a successful expedition to the far reaches of Newfoundland into a stunning new video. Watch it here: http://www.jennscoolnewvideo.com/youllgofar/icebergprey just kidding, the real web blammo is here. Oh, and by the way, we hear a rumour that Six Shooter hero Bruce Cockburn is going to make a cameo appearance at Jenn's Kingston show this month. Cool! Plus, don't miss Jenn's headline concert in Toronto at the Glenn Gould Theatre. Hott!
You may already have seen the new video from Shout Out Out Out Out with homie Cadence Weapon on MuchMusic's "The Wedge". No? It's also in rotation on AuxTV (who we love by the way! Music videos? For real? You play those?)! If you haven't seen it yet, watch the Shoutset boys set things (and themselves) on fire here.
This summer, Justin Rutledge dipped the oars in the waters north of Toronto (that's what she said) to make a new video for the sombre track "The Wire". While cabin + lake + summer usually = fun, this video puts a new spin on a slow spin out of control. So yeah, it's like a new-spin-slow-spin type of vibe, kind of like when you drink waaaay too many crantinis and then ride one of those merry-go-round things in a playground, and the mere thought of sand makes you want to barf for years afterwards... except for it's a video in a lake with oar dipping and such. Director Exan Auyoung shot a beautiful video AND taught Justin how to row ("first lesson Justin, stop calling it PADDLING!!!"). Sadly, the link didn’t come in soon enough for us to include here, but check our website, twitter, and so on... we'll post it as soon as we have it.
THE BEAUTIES TOP BEST OF TORONTO LIST
Isn't it satisfying to have something you know to be true in print so that everyone else can read it? I was hella stoked when I finally saw a tabloid report that Demi has saggy knees, I feel like I've been saying that for years, and no one listened! I am now legitimate! Similarly, NOW Magazine recently announced The Beauties as the Best Roots Band in Toronto. The critics have spoken! And this all before they even have an album out. The Beauties head into the studio this month with producer Martin Kinack (Sarah Harmer, Apostle of Hustle, Amy Millan, etc), upon which we have high expectations that they will be reported as being the Best Roots Band in Toronto Who Also Have an Album and Remarkably Taut Knees.
NQ ARBUCKLE AND CAROLYN MARK SITTING IN A TREE
NQ Arbuckle and Carolyn Mark have consummated their long-standing love affair with each other by recording a CD together, entitled Let's Just Stay Here, out now on Mint Records. We think it's weird to lend NQ out to our friends on the west coast...it's sorta like wife swapping, maybe, except at least we didn't have to sleep with any strange men, thank goodness. But the record is out in any case, and it's totally great, of course. We were pleased to see that the CBC Bucky Awards thought so, too, nominating NQ's song Saskatoon Tonight for Best Canadian Song and his ballad, Officer Down for Best Lyrics. NQ & Carolyn were supposed to do more touring in November, but it looks like those dates have gone by the wayside and will be picked up in January. Stay tuned!
OTTAWA WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
The Six Shooter showcase, "Night of the Shooting Stars" crowed wowds in Ottawa on October 16! No wait, other way around... I meant wowed crowds (I've never been good at tongue twisters). It was an amazing night of music. NQ Arbuckle was in fine form as an emcee (more profane than Chris Rock) and we were all thrilled to see the artists up on stage all at once (although, really, was a human pyramid too much to ask?). How could we pick just one highlight when artists like Royal Wood, Bidiniband, Amelia Curran, Justin Rutledge, Luke Doucet, Melissa McClelland, NQ Arbuckle and The Beauties are in the same line-up? We can't. The whole thing was decidedly highlightatious! Thanks everyone!

TATTOO YOU
Awhile back we made these bitchin' Six Shooter fake tattoos based on classic early tattoo art. Our pal Andy Washington was so inspired by these pumpin' tatts, that he ran with the idea and got some bonafide ink based on the idea! Wow, that's dedication! Check out the pics: gallery.me.com
So, of course, this has prompted us to realize the necessity of throwing a tattoo based contest! So here it is: the first person who gets a full back piece tattoo of Justin Rutledge's face, gets a free CD! HA HA HA HA!!! Just kidding (but if you do wanna do that, we will give you a free cd).
How about this instead: we want you to get artistic! Sketch up a Six Shooter based tattoo flash design, whether it be one of our fabulous artists rendered as a pin-up or sailor or something, or a classic tattoo style rendition of our logo, or even a picture of the Tasmanian devil wearing a Six Shooter toque and smoking a doob! Send the design to us, and whichever one we deem to be the best (based on our completely subjective judging criteria), wins a wonderful prize!!! Yaaah!

Title track: from Hawksley Workman's "Bullets", track 6 of "For Him and the Girls".
Life is too short to listen to shitty music.
