--Six Shooter Bullets --

Mar. 2009, Vol. 06, No. 03

it's not backstabbing if you see it coming

In thish ish:

  1. Juno Jumpoff

  2. SXSW Recovery

We're keeping it short and sweet this time around, on account of this being merely the eye of the party storm. Just to clarify though, here is a list of things that most people find funny, that I do not find funny:

  • ninjas

  • doing 'the robot'

  • pirates (this includes talking like a pirate and pointing out that you are talking like a pirate, or using words like "booty" when you don't mean a butt)

  • moustaches (this one seems to be the most contentious with people who do find moustaches funny, which seems to be most of the world. I have no problem with a genuine moustache, I just find no humor in ironic moustaches, moustache jokes, or moustache paraphenalia). Are we clear now?

JUNO 2009 MADNESS

So, now that the year's-worth-of-weekends-packed-into-four-days insanity that is SXSW is finally making its way out of our livers, it's time to set the sights of our Six Shooters (see what I did there?) on some more great western party action. We are rounding up a bunch of our artists and heading over to beautiful Vancouver, BC for the Canuck institution that is Juno weekend. Check out our stacked dance card:

Hawksley Workman will be holding it down big tiiiiime at the Junos - first as the host of the prestigious Songwriter Circle at the Vancouver Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, March 29 at noon. His guests include Buffy Sainte-Marie, Ndidi Onukwulu (gesundheit!), Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor, Sarah Slean, and Hedley. Then with barely enough time to change into his red carpet duds (we are trying to convince him to get chameleonic and don a tux that is actually made out of red carpet), Workman will be performing on the televised portion of the awards, leading Great Big Sea and World Music nominee Eccodek in a rousing Led Zeppelin cover. The production details of the televised show are of course top secret, but we are really hoping they do something cool, like shoot Hawksley on stage via pneumatic tube or have all the performers engage in a potato sack race or something.

Junofest is going to be mega bitchin', too. Royal Wood doodles around at Doolins on Friday night at 10 pm, then we'll be running over the Railway Club to holler at some of that memory-wiping Merrydale Cider and catch Jason Plumb at 11 pm, and then at Midnight, since we're gonna want a bit more, Elliott BROOD headlines the CBC Radio 3 sponsored night at the Biltmore. Shout Out Out Out Out plays Richards on Richard's at 9pm on Saturday (with a dj set to follow at the Astoria) and NQ Arbuckle takes the midnight spot at Shark's. To booze can or not to booze can, that is the question.

Juno Cup Hockey is another slam dunk event (slam dunks are in hockey right? I don't score many field goals when it comes to sports terminology), with four Six Shootererererers on the ice: Luke Doucet and Peter Kesper (NQ Arbuckle) in goal, and Mark Sasso (Elliott BROOD) and John Dinsmore (NQ Arbuckle) on the wings. Shout Out Out Out Out's drummer Gravy is hella choked that he isn't on the ice this year, and we are fully expecting him to rush the bench. The event takes place at UBC Arena on Friday, starting at 7:30 pm. Cross check it out! That was a pun, btw.

JUNO MADNESS

Congratulations to all the Six Shooter artists who were nominated for Junos! Elliott BROOD landed two noms, one for Outstanding Roots Album and another for their fantastic artwork. The BROOD rival their buddies in NQ Arbuckle, also nominated for Outstanding Roots Album. And Hawksley Workman brings in a nomination for his album, Between the Beautifuls (Universal), in the category of Outstanding Adult Alternative Album, OAAA for short (said, Ohhhhh!) The Six Shooter crew is totally pumped to bring the party to Vancouver at the end of March to celebrate in style. Elliott BROOD headline the CBC Radio 3 night at the Biltmore on the Friday night of Junofest, and NQ Arbuckle play Shark's Club on Saturday at midnight. Also hitting Vancouver for Junofest are Shout Out Out Out Out, who play Richards on Richards, Saturday at 9:30 pm. Hawksley Workman Songwriter Circle at the Vancouver Performing Arts Centre on Sunday afternoon. We're really looking forward to pulling up on the red carpet and having media scramble to figure out who the $@%& we are! More tequila, please.

SXSW RECAP

SXSW is easily one of the wildest festivals in North America, and we like to think that we have it on lock. Austin is always crazy busy for Six Shooter and our artists, and this year was no exception. Check it:

Our label showcase at Velveeta's went off like ants on a log, from the moment our special guest Oh Susanna sang her first note right through to the final ballad by our chipotle voiced favourite, NQ Arbuckle. Jenn Grant and her lovely band serenaded us, Melissa McClelland shot lasers into our psyches, Elliott BROOD bbq'd our ribs, and Luke Doucet tickled the six string like nobody's business... hmm, that description doesn't sound as cool as it actually was, I better try again. Luke Doucet shredded our faces of and sent our cosmic auras to Pluto and back with each hot lick!!!!

Six Shooter once again took over Headhunters for our fourth annual Afternoon Hootenanny. Hosted by NQ Arbuckle, this year's line up included Jenn Grant, Luke Doucet, Melissa McClelland, Elliott BROOD, The Perpetrators, Bazil Donovan, $100, Slim Twig, and the Wet Secrets. In addition to the many fine bands who played, Shauna "Tequila" de Cartier was there in full force, handing out shots and limes to all the friendly partiers, and drawing pentagrams on the odd VIP. Kewl!

With five shows at SXSW this year, Shout Out Out Out Out left Austin exhausted, but fully triumphant. Their neurotic dance parties kept the packed houses sweaty at the Terrorbird/Force Field day party at Red 7, The Canadian Blast at Brush Square Park, their official showcases presented by AM Only at Karma on Wednesday night, and Beauty Bar Backyard on Friday night, and finally with what wound up being one of the final sets at the Red Bull Moon Tower before it got shut down for a noise complaint (uh, what? Noise complaints at a giant music festival?). Luckily no one fell off the stage this year.

Throughout SXSW, we also fell in love with our South Congress digs, a.k.a. The Six Shooter House of Sins, co-hosted by our good friends at XM The Verge. With 10 or so great bands performing in our house every day, we were in heaven! Cheers to all of our amazing music making pals! And also special thanks to Anne, Ian, Johnny, Jeff, Karen, and all the staff for helping make it great! What the hell was in those cookies? Probably just macadamia nuts or something...
