SIX SHOOTER @ SXSW

We have been psyching ourselves up for Austin since before Christmas! We are super stoked that the SXSW folks have invited us back to the Velveeta Room (521 E 6th St @ Red River) again to host our label showcase. This year, it's on Thursday, March 19, featuring: Jenn Grant (9pm), Melissa McClelland (10pm), Elliott BROOD (11pm), Luke Doucet (midnight), and NQ Arbuckle (1am). Special guest Oh Susanna opens the night at 8 pm.

We are also pleased to announce that the Six Shooter Hootenanny will take place again this year, at Headhunters (720 Red River)...this year on Friday Mar 20 from 2 pm - 5 pm. Along with the regular liquorish (licorice?) whippin' good times, we're sure they'll be heavy doses of tequila doused on new friends. Yeah!

The "flaming" mad-electro-genius gang, Shout Out Out Out Out, are playing four times, including the Terrorbird Party, the Canada Blast party, and two awesome evening showcases. And don't miss the other flamers on parade when the Wet Secrets make their SXSW debut on Thurs @ 9 pm at El Sol y La Luna. See tour dates for full details.

JUNO MADNESS

Congratulations to all the Six Shooter artists who were nominated for Junos! Elliott BROOD landed two noms, one for Outstanding Roots Album and another for their fantastic artwork. The BROOD rival their buddies in NQ Arbuckle, also nominated for Outstanding Roots Album. And Hawksley Workman brings in a nomination for his album, Between the Beautifuls (Universal), in the category of Outstanding Adult Alternative Album, OAAA for short (said, Ohhhhh!) The Six Shooter crew is totally pumped to bring the party to Vancouver at the end of March to celebrate in style. Elliott BROOD headline the CBC Radio 3 night at the Biltmore on the Friday night of Junofest, and NQ Arbuckle play Shark's Club on Saturday at midnight. Also hitting Vancouver for Junofest are Shout Out Out Out Out, who play Richards on Richards, Saturday at 9:30 pm. Hawksley Workman Songwriter Circle at the Vancouver Performing Arts Centre on Sunday afternoon. We're really looking forward to pulling up on the red carpet and having media scramble to figure out who the $@%& we are! More tequila, please.

SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT REINTEGRATION TIME

So, like we were saying, Nik 7 has been far too busy getting covered in goop and getting set on fire to write the newsletter, and therefore will also be too busy to defend himself as we go on a Nik-newsletter-wedgie rampage!

Butt seriously - Shout Out Out Out Out are set to release their new record, Reintegration Time, which comes out March 3 (and in the US May 5). They kick things off this weekend in their hometown proud, including a second show on Sunday night they just announced because people are so excited. We're even hearing rumours that they'll debut their newly made video for "Coming Home", featuring Cadence Weapon. Nobody will want to miss that!

And if we can talk about absentees, the Top Spot goes to craftmaster Lyle Bell, who spent three weeks crafting exact replicas of their synths for the new video. Pretty amazing stuff. You can check out http://www.vueweekly.com/article.php?id=11141 for some behind the scenes footage (or just go see it in full at the release shows this weekend. Ye'know).

For all the inside scoops on their Canadian and the USA tour dates, including a party pit stop during SXSW, see the dates section below.

ROYAL WOOD IS LOST AND FOUND

Royal Wood is putting the finishing touches on his latest work, entitled The Lost and Found EP, which will be ready in early March. The recording, featuring piano, strings, and Royal's gorgeous vocals, is a gem of an album created to tie fans over until his full-length release in 2010. Pre-sales are just $10 and available through www.sixshooterrecords.com - all buyers will received a signed copy of the CD when it's finished. Dreamy. Royal will have this disc in hand when he hits the road again with Serena Ryder. See tour dates for more details.

MELISSA McCLELLAND CELEBRATES VICTORIA DAY

We are hopped up to be releasing a new album from Melissa McClelland - her third album and her first for Six Shooter. Entitled Victoria Day, Melissa and husband/producer Luke Doucet masterfully deliver us rebel-rouser guitars in 1950s Hollywood- style infused with a southern-country twang. The songs capture all of the beauty and charm of the girl next door while lacing the punch at the sock hop with home-made moonshine. We know you'll be fall down drunk in love with it and can't wait for you to see Melissa perform these songs live - check out her shows in Ontario with Justin Rutledge and shows out west with Jason Plumb.

LUKE DOUCET & AMELIA CURRAN

It's almost March, and we're still discovering more 2008 year-end goodness. The Semi-Twang blog and playist named Luke Doucet's Blood's Too Rich as the Number 1 CD of the Year. And Penguin Eggs, the distinguished folkzine, named Justin Rutledge's Man Descending in the Top Ten Critics' Albums of the Year, and named Amelia Curran as the Number 1 Music Discovery of 2008. Yay for us! Top dogs Luke Doucet and Amelia Curran recently met for the first time in Memphis at the Folk Alliance, where Luke played the guitar workshop of his dreams with legends Albert Lee and James Burton. It was one of the highlights of his life as these two greats played on Luke's songs, The Day Rick Danko Died and Emily, Please. He'll take that inspiration on the road with him across the country on a national tour that starts this week.

JENN GRANT SHOOTS 'EM UP WITH ECHOES

She's been to Hollywood, she's been to Redwood, she's crossed the ocean with a heart of gold. Since the release of the smashing sophomore, Echoes, Jenn "the total fox" Grant has been leaving a trail of rave reviews in her wake. No longer heartbroken but emerging as a heartbreaker (ref: see gorgeous shots and smart stories from the cover of The Toronto Star's Sunday Arts section, hometown weekly The Coast, and Ottawa's Xpress), Jenn collects the acclaim from coast to coast. With her suitcase bulging, Jenn packed in appearances on CBC News Sunday, Canada AM, XM's Live at The Verge, CBC's Definitely Not the Opera, Q and Drive, while the Six Shooter posse caught up on stories in Exclaim, Metro, The National Post, The Ottawa Citizen, The Ottawa Sun and Chartattack. After a quick trip to Los Angeles for Grammy Week and a successful round of Ontario/Quebec CD release shows, Jenn has fled the country to tackle the UK press machine before returning to Ontario for a showcase during CMW. We hope the praise here in Canada echoes in the ears of our US compadres before her showcase at SXSW in March.

SONGSTRESSES OF SIX SHOOTER @ CMW

2009 is the Year of the Woman at Six Shooter, with a new Jenn Grant album already out, and new releases coming from Melissa McClelland and Amelia Curran. Add Six Shooterer Wendy McNeill and special guest Moriarty to the line up, and we've got one smoking hot bill. We are pleased to team up with Exclaim! Magazine to present the Songstresses of Six Shooter during Canadian Music Week at the Reverb on Saturday, March 14.

CHRISTINE FELLOWS TAKES UP RESIDENCE AT ST. BONIFACE

The Winnipeg Arts Council announced Christine Fellows as their selection for the new Artist-in-Residence public art project at Le Musee de Saint-Boniface Museum. They write, "As a gifted songwriter, composer, performer and multidisciplinary collaborator, Christine brings artistic integrity, creative energy and boundless curiosity to this exciting project." The goal of the program is to integrate artists and their ideas into City facilities to explore civic resources and history through the creative process. Le Musee de Saint-Boniface Museum works with a collection of artifacts that reveal the lives and culture of the Francophone and Metis communities of Manitoba, including a special exhibit about Louis Riel. The Museum is housed in the old Grey Nuns' Convent. Built between 1846 and 1851 for the Grey Nuns who arrived in the Red River Colony in 1844, the structure is an outstanding example of Red River frame construction and is in fact the Museum's principal artifact. Le Musee de Saint-Boniface Museum represents a distinctive and significant part of Manitoban and Canadian history. Christine will begin the residency on February 17 and will work with the collections and with the public at the Museum over a six-month period to create a new artwork.

FIND YOUR FIVE HOLE

So those of you who aren't familiar with that term, it's nothing dirty. Really. But who better to explain it than Dave Bidini, Martin Tielli, Selina Martin, Ford Pier and Ryan Granville-Martin The Five Hold Band. Throughout the tour, they'll be performing songs from their new CD, Five Hole Stories (Zunior). Members of the One Yellow Rabbit Performance Troupe will be performing vignettes from the runaway smash erotic hockey play, The Five Hole Stories. And if that wasn't enough, the evening will begin with The Imponderables performing 20 mins from the new Bidini play, The Night of the Dogs, directeed by Ted Dykstra. It's part of the Passe Murraile Buzz series. See dates below.
