New art show
New contest!
Spring has sprung! Am I right or what?! We are currently viewing the world through Tulip Coloured glasses (kinda makes everything look like pee), and we are filled with all kindsa fresh inspiration about all of our brand new, fresh-sod-like NEW NEW NEW happenings.
JUSTIN RUTLEDGE'S MAN DESCENDING
Justin's third album, "Man Descending" hit the streets April 8 and people are like totally freaking out about it. I even saw a kid using a copy of the cd as a tool to open up a fire hydrant so they could rejoice in its greatness while being pummeled by water as powerful as Justin's smokin' tunes. Phew! The kid was pretty good at that whole "freestyle rap" thing too. Itunes made Se–or Rutledge's banger, 'Everyone's In Love', their single of the week, and Toronto's Now Magazine just gave it a splendertastic NNNN review. That's what they call stars in the centre of the universe.
We also discovered that the dude in charge of the England Arts Council has a favourite songwriter, and it is none other than our very own Justin Rutledge. We are shocked and amazed that this upper class Brit would have a colonial for his favourite songwriter, and so now we are hoping that one day Justin can become Sir Justin Rutledge, just like Sir Elton John or Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Oh, and for those of you wondering where Justin got the racy title for his CD, we can ask you to please get your mind out of the gutter and know that it was taken from a collection of short stories by Canadian novelist Guy Vanderhaeghe. Vanderhaeghe, delighted by the title Rutledge chose for the CD, returned the compliment by sending the singer signed copies of two of his novels.
The official Toronto CD release party of this fine disc has just been announced for FRIDAY, May 30 at the Trinity St. Paul Centre. Melissa McClelland opens. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at Ticketmaster, Ticketpro, Soundscapes, Rotate This, Six Shooter Records Store (1118 Queen St. East), and www.sixshooterrecords.com.
WET SECRETS DELIVER AFTER YEARS OF FOREPLAY
Y'know what I think of when someone mentions marching band uniforms, moustaches, potty-mouthed sailor talk, and the tuba in the same sentence? Edmonton! More specifically, Edmonton's The Wet Secrets, the latest "best-kept-secret" to leak out of the Northern Alberta talent pool. Like a lot of Edmonton exports, The Wet Secrets boast an impressive "members of" list (Shout Out Out Out Out, Whitey Houston, Whitsundays, Vertical Struts), and song titles that will make your mom blush and CBC Radio 3 hand out awards ("Grow Your Own F*cking Moustache Asshole"). Known locally for such stunts as writing, recording, and releasing homemade Cds within remarkably short periods of time, May 13th will mark the release date of The Wet Secrets first "official" album release! The fully-stunning semi-debut "Rock Fantasy" will be released on the band's own Rodeo Peanut Records (managed by Six Shooter), and then they'll be taking their moustache ride across Canada. See tour dates below!
EVERYONE IS ON ZE EUROPEAN TOUR!
-- Hawksley Workman embarks on a headlining tour of Europe, with his full band in tow, hitting the UK, Scandinavia, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Holland. Hawksley plans to sample pastries in each country and his band will determine which country is the pastry capital of Europe by carefully monitoring the Hawk's facial ticks and changes in mood upon consumption of each morsel. I hate the word morsel, why did I have to write that? Morsel morsel morsel morsel. Speaking of morsels... fans at these shows will be the first to be able to pick up a copy of Hawksley's fantastic new disc, Los Manlicious, which is not yet available in Canada.
-- Longtime pals and collaborators Luke Doucet and Oh Susanna tear up Europe with Rich Levesque and Cam The Super Drummer Man doing double rhythm section duty. Rich and Cam have watched National Lampoon's 'European Vacation' 134 times in anticipation of the trip. They just want make sure that they are fully ready, and besides, it's been a great bonding experience which has helped them feel comfortable being on tour with a pair of longtime pals and collaborators.
-- Jenn Grant heads to the UK/Italy. She was just going to do a few shows here and there, but ended up with a ram-packed schedule with only a few days off. I gotta say that Jenn Grant has really stepped up to the plate with her constant touring. She's like a modern day Natty Gann (although really I can't remember what that movie was about at all other than that there was a journey involved... or was it that Journey did the soundtrack... damn memory!) Check it out below.
-- After a mighty tour of the USA with her hometown Winnipeg pals, The Weakerthans, busting out mega jams and wowing crowds in preparation for the release of her jaw-dropping "Nevertheless" stateside May 6, Christine Fellows returns home to empty her suitcase (she only packed pretzel crumbs) and clean house (pretzel crumbs get everywhere) for the arrival of artist supreme/projector queen Shary Boyle. I havenÍt seen anyone rock an overhead projector like Shary Boyle, she pretty much blows away the competition for me (of course the competition for me so far has consisted mostly of junior high science teachers). The two head off to Regina for a rippin' show at the Dunlop Gallery. Speaking of fine art, Christine might have time to critique some of them purdy pictures while on tour in Europe with, surprise surprise, her best pals... wait for it... The Weakerthans! These dudes loved Christine's music so much that they've invited her along on their month long trek overseas. This will be Christine's first European tour! Watch out for the rhinos Christine, they are EVERYWHERE!!!! See tour dates.
EXCEPT ROYAL & JUSTIN, WHO ARE KICKING IT UP IN CANADA
-- Royal Wood takes his beautiful release, "A Good Enough Day" on the road across Canada, visiting some cities for the first time since its release last year, with the Baroness herself, Sarah Slean, who has a beautiful new album (with a beautiful new single called "Get Home"). This is going to be one beauty tour.
-- Justin Rutledge has developed the ultimate high five technique, even cooler than (I know this sounds impossible) the over-under-high-to-low five popularized in the film Top Gun. In a level of secrecy on par with the Freemasons, Justin has only allowed one other person to be privy to this advanced high five method, and that lucky peer is the one and only Kathleen Edwards. So yeah, they are touring together (of course).
NEW WORD
Our highly astute Six Shooter vocabulary researchists have uncovered a long lost sea scroll in their mailbox that looks oddly like a real estate flyer. On this magical document a BRAND NEW WORD was discovered, and that word is... BUNGALOW!!!! Ok, so maybe bungalow isn't a new word, but it sure is a funny one. Like, how in tha hell does the word bungalow describe a bunglow?! I ain't gittin it at all!!!
ART EXHIBIT AT SIX SHOOTER STORE
We are very stoked to be presenting Mavreen David's photography show, A Road Less Traveled which has great photos of a historic road - the mother road -- Route 66. The images leave an impression of desertion and emptiness, but allude to a time where the sites and sounds boomed and the route thrived. The series was captured during the making of the music documentary, "Pedal to Steel - Melissa McClelland's Route 66." This is part of Toronto's CONTACT photography festival from May 18 - 25. The artist will be in residence (which means free wine!) on May 22, from 7:00 - 10:00 PM. Join us at 1118 Queen St. East.
NEWSLETTER CONTEST
In light of the release of The Wet Secrets' 'Rock Fantasy', we have been thinking a lot about what our own rock fantasies would be. I personally would love to be the one who got swirl around the food colouring on the projector at a Rush concert. That would be fun! And trippy... duuuuuuuude!
So for this month's contest, we want to hear about your Rock Fantasy! Most radical rock fantasy as judged by our discerning taste in humour will win a prize of some sort. Oh, and winning the prize canÍt be your fantasy.
