TORONTO SHOWDOWN
We've got a few zingers for ya this holiday season!
On Friday, December 14th, CHRISTINE FELLOWS celebrates the launch of her fantastic new album, "Nevertheless". Co-collaborator SHARY BOYLE joins Christine and her string trio for some fantastic live illustration/projection. Shary's stuff is seriously mega-bitchin', she rules the overhead projector way harder you're your 8th grade science teacher! Openers LEANNE ZACHARIAS and BABY EAGLE start the evening. Grown-up Eagle will be keeping a watchful eye to make sure no one is passing out poisonous candy canes, so behave yourselves you creeps. Doors 7 pm, tickets $15 and available at sixshooterrecords.com.
On Friday, December 14th and Saturday December 15, Art of Time presents Schumann's Piano Quintet Op. 44 and 10 original songs inspired by the Schumann Quintet written and performed by Canadian singer/songwriters MARTIN TIELLI, JUSTIN RUTLEDGE, JOHN SOUTHWORTH, AMY MILLAN, ANDY MAIZE and DAVID WALL. Check out the winner from last issue's contest below, to see how Schumann rhymes with poo man! The show is at the Enwave Theatre, and tickets are available through Harbourfront Centre Box Office at 416.973.4000, or online at arbourfrontcentre.com.
On Saturday, December 22, MIA SHEARD hosts The Twelfth Christmas, A Benefit for Amnesty International and The Daily Bread Food Bank at The Rivoli. Tix $10 at door, bring food bank donation. Guests include: JUSTIN RUTLEDGE, DAVE BIDINI, SARAH HARMER, LEX VAUGHN, CASEY MECIJA (OHBIJOU), SELINA MARTIN, ROYAL WOOD, GREAT AUNT IDA, PAUL LINKLATER, KURT SWINGHAMMER, and others. This is going to be on the "feeed tha wuuurrrld!" tip, only with less Boy George and more Phil Collins. Whatever that means.
LUKE DOUCET'S BLOOD'S TOO RICH
International man of mystery and face-melters, LUKE DOUCET, is about to launch his insanely good, highly anticipated new record, Blood's Too Rich - a teeth-bared, holsters ready, ear-to-ear guitar record, full of solos that'll rip your heart out. See Luke on tour in January with BLUE RODEO. He'll be the one doing the one-arm pushups, while rippin' a sweet lick, combing his hair, and chuggin' a pint of scotch. To quote Toronto: "Ho-Lee Chow"!
Hold your breath for more Six Shooter albums in the works, including new beauties by JUSTIN RUTLEDGE, ELLIOTT BROOD, and NQ ARBUCKLE. Ie. The GANG!
HAWKSLEY WORKMAN DOWN UNDER
HAWKSLEY WORKMAN embarks on Boxing Day to the long trip to the other side of the world where he is playing some summer festivals in Australia. In other words, ahem... Hawksley will celebrate boxing day by... BOXING WITH 'ROOS!!! Of course. Upon his return, he is greeted by the release of his new album, "Between the Beautifuls", which hits the street on January 29. He'll be all "oh. Hello new album, pleased to meet you". If you wanna defrost the airwaves before then, you can request Hawk's new single, "Piano Blink". Tickets are now on sale for his upcoming Canadian tour in March.
UPCOMING EUROPEAN RELEASES
Six Shooter will be kicking of the new year in Europe with four releases through our new friends at Rounder Europe. LUKE DOUCET's "Blood's Too Rich" and CHRISTINE FELLOWS' "Nevertheless" will both be released in January. JENN GRANT's "Orchestra for the Moon" and ROYAL WOOD's "A Good Enough Day" hit the European streets on Feb 8 2008.
Check tour dates for chances to see Royal Wood in Europe this winter.
CHART KICKS OFF AWARD SEASON
JENN GRANT is one of many artists up for this year's Golden Toque Award (Best Canadian Album) in the 13th Annual Year-End Readers Poll at Chart Magazine (vote for her at www.chartattack.com). Also up for awards are SHOUT OUT OUT OUT OUT's NIK KOZUB and HAWKSLEY WORKMAN for some sort of sexy male award (and Jenn is up for sexy female). Oh, and Hawksley Workman is up for best haircut. Best haircut?
ROYAL WOOD VIDEO ON MYSPACE
In more internet fantastic-ness, ROYAL WOOD's new video for A Mirror Without hit the front page of myspace.com. Check it out! In the olden days, you'd have to march your ass down to the ol' movie house on 34th st. (it would be a miracle) if you wanted to watch Royal talkies. These days you just gotta click on the virtual boob tube, ain't that somethin'?
Here's some more Royal jelly for ya... ITunes Canada listed Royal as one of the Best Songwriters of 2007...he did an instrumental version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" on the Zunior Christmas album (all proceeds going to The Daily Bread Food Bank) with The Great Lake Swimmers and more. You can download the album on www.zunior.com, as well as have a listen to the track...and on Friday Dec 21st, Royal will be performing two songs live on Matt Galloway's CBC Radio 1 show "Here and Now" at 4pm. Man, Royal is one busy bee!
GREAT DEALS AT QUEEN STREET EAST
Ok, so you've rocked out all year on wedding gifties, birthday finds, anniversary giveaways....now it's Christmas and you need some hot present action. Yeah, so who wouldn't be stoked to get a Beatles puzzle or some Rush playing cards Or a new Six Shooter T-shirt or cozy hoodie and a giant book about the Top 100 Canadian Albums Of All Time? For the entertainer, there's (amazing) hot sauce and and cowboy dress up sets...uh...and there are kids toys like mini-music boxes and recorders and shakers.
For the snappy dresser, snazzy jewelry by our friend SARAH DOUCET/TWITCH is in abundance. Who wouldnÍt want to own a weird Bjork movie or a Flaming Lips documentary....plus we have Christmas cards that say stuff like, "Merry Christmas, you cheap little trollop" and "his thoughtful gift had exchange written all over it!" I mean, hilarious, right? Basically, what I am saying is that we have Xmas on LOCK! Seriously, we will hook you up with the raw deal for your music nerd pals and fams.
Oh, and we're open Dec. 27-30 for all your post-Christmas, need-to-get-away-from-the-in-laws shopping excuses. We'll be doing a 15% off everything sale, which means that Reuben's chaps will indeed be buttless (15% less butt anyway).
Giddyup!

THE FUN NEVER ENDS AT SIX SHOOTER
Wow, you guys sure had fun with that Schumann contest. We got so many entries! But the winner is Heather Pollock, who won by a nose, with the following entries:
(Alfred E.) Newman
(I've got the) flu man
(In the morning I) poo man
You gotta give her credit for finding a rhyme that even rhymezone.com wouldn't have offered up. Poo Man? This is possibly the best contest entry we've received! Not because it's lowbrow, but because it both addresses the contest criteria, AND a totally hilarious bodily function, AND demonstrates how our readers are smart enough to get enough fiber to stay regular, AND works well with our motto of "Life Is Too Short To Listen To Shitty Music". Bravo, Heather, bravo!
Of course we all know that the thought is what counts when gift giving is concerned. This is a given. But what do you do when your Great Aunt twice removed finds out that you are a music fan and decides to use her own judgment when buying you an album at Wal-Mart for Christmas? The local record store knows the score, and they aren't going to buy your crap, so you've gotta get creative!
So, this month's contest is this: We are looking for the most creative use for a shitty CD that's crowding up the underside of your tree. A coaster isn't good enough, we want crafty ideas for what to do with that waste of packaging and unlistenable garbage that makes even the least discerning laser recoil in fear.
Happy Holidaze!!!!
Donner, and Blitzen, and the Six Shooter Posse
Title track: From "First Snow of the Year", Track 2 of Hawksley Workman's Christmas record, "Almost a Full Moon".
