September 2004 - vol. 1, no. 5.

Emily, please don't tell my mother.

  2. Rheostatics record released 63 years early.

  3. And the winner is...

  4. Doodle contest!

  5. Dance Party!

  6. Rewriting the dictionary one word at a time.

  7. Ve are on ze tour... Ford Pier/Weakerthans (USA)/Luke Doucet & Danny Michel/NQ Arbuckle/Rheostatics/Justin Rutledge (UK)/Captain Tractor

  8. Intern needed. Apply within.

Hey, did I ever tell you the one about the farts and the boobies?

LIVE AND RELEASED!

Ok, so the other day I saw this tour poster for the death metal band Cryptopsy, and it said "featuring the return of Lord Worm!". Man! Why didn't we think of that?! How cool would it be if we did a big Veal show (once Luke was finished playing around on the Lord of the Rings set) and we were able to say "featuring the return of Sorcerer Slug!" or something bitchin'‚ like that? Then again, have you ever seen a slug crawl into a dish full of beer? Let me tell ya, it is dis-gus-ting.

Speaking of Luke, his new album, "Outlaws [live + unreleased]" is finally out! Now the hundreds of people who froze their bums off waiting in line outside of the Rivoli to see the two recorded live shows last January will finally get to relive their blissful hypothermia. The weather might have been cold, but the record is hot hot hot! It has a bunch of new songs and a bunch of fan faves from both his solo and Veal repertoires. And hey, with our hot new distro deal with the amazing folks at Warner, you'll be able to find it in stores as soon as...well...today! Then you can go to Luke's live show in your very own hometown (or hell, hop on as bus and follow the l'il dude across the country!) where he'll be playing his heart out on the twangy-twang while Paul Brennan plays the smashy-smash and Richard Levesque plays the boh-de-doo.

look at 'em go:

Sept 28 - Kingston, ON - Grad Club
Sept 29 - Ottawa, ON - Barrymore's
Sept 30 - Montreal, QC - Le Petit Campus, Pop Montreal Festival
Oct 1 - Hamilton, ON - The Casbah
Oct 2 - Toronto, ON - Horseshoe Tavern
Oct 3 - Waterloo, ON - Starlight Social Club
Oct 5 - Winnipeg, MB - Red River College (nooner)
Oct 5 - Winnipeg, MB - West End Cultural Centre (early show)
Oct 6 - Calgary, AB - Liberty Lounge
Oct 7 - Edmonton, AB – Sidetrack Café (early show)
Oct 8 - Robert's Creek, BC - Gumboot Cafe
Oct 9 - Vancouver, BC - Richard's on Richards (early show)

All dates are co-bills with the fabulous barbeque chef Danny Michel, except Montreal because Danny's poutine addiction usually puts him out of commission for the rest of a tour if he even steps foot in that city. I heard somewhere that Halifax claims they invented the donair. Now that's just ridiculous.

IT'S THE HOUSE BAND WHO'S DRUNK, NOT I

You can also check out Luke Doucet all night long at the "Steepleful of Swallows", a Tom Waits tribute night held at the El Mocambo in Toronto on Monday, Sept. 27 (the day before Luke and Danny kick off their tour). He will be playing in the house band which will also include Mark Mariash, Tyler Yarema, and Ben Carlson. A variety of performers (like: Kathryn Rose, Kurt Swinghammer, Jennifer Ryan, Melissa McClelland, Jory Nash, Noah Zacharin, and many others, some of which will be last minute additions) will be performing their favorite Tom Waits songs (hopefully they will also do Tom Waits impressions but I doubt it). The whole shebang is hosted by Tory Cassis who will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Canadian Therapy Trust Fund ( www.musictherapytrust.com ) - a worthwhile charity that supports music therapy as a method of treatment for mental and physical health problems. I just saw a magazine ad for Lil Tommy's new album and it looked like a scene straight out of Fla shdance! I sure hope some of that happens on the 27th. welding...welding...DANCING!

so yeah:

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 2004 * EL MOCAMBO
DOORS @ 8:00 PM
TICKETS (Including GST) - $10.00 at the door

Go and ask Luke to do a Tom Waits impression, he loves that.

THE FUTURE IS NOW

Rheostatics are also dropping a new record, "2067", hitting stores on October 5 (True North Records). It's all futuristic and stuff. If this record was sent out into outer space on a satellite and broadcast into a gaseous cloud in a continuous loop, there would most certainly be a steady stream of alien life forms oozing under the door of drummer/producer Michael Phillip Wojewoda wanting to bump out some freaky alien jams. This new Rheostatics record is their most cinematic outing since 1992's "Whale Music", which I must say has quite a few total bangers on it.

The 2067 tour kicks off with the first ever West Coast Green Sprouts Music Week in Vancouver at the Media Club (Oct. 19-23) and ends with the fourth annual Fall Nationals at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, Nov. 11-20. More tour details to follow in the next newsletter.

WANNA SELL?

Calling all used car salesmen and/or willing volunteers...we are looking for some big time sellers to man the merch booths at the upcoming Luke Doucet/Danny Michel dates, as well as the Rheostatics concerts. Contact me if you're interested in pimping swag in your town. You will be rewarded with love...awwww!

BUCKLE UP

The probable winner of the belt buckle photo contest is Deb Cupples from Colorado Springs. If no one else comes through with a better snappy snapshot, then Deb'll get a full Six Shooter catalogue and a very limited edition vinyl poster created by nikseven ( www.nrmlswlcm.com ), featuring a double-Tielli head.

Deb's stunning photo was an accidental candid self-shot in which she was caught chewing on her belt buckle like a taco chip. We tried this out ourselves and found that the Six Shooter belt buckles really don't taste that good, and found it honorable that Deb would put herself in harm's way just for us. Bonus points were awarded for wearing a Tielli t-shirt in the pic. Check it out at www.sixshooterrecords.com.

NEW CONTEST!

We are so excited about Luke's new live record that all of us here at Six Shooter have found ourselves spacing out and drawing pictures of the hunky stud-muffin. We figure that all of you must be doing the same so we decided to see who has the best pencil crayon skills. Whoever sends us the best (and by best we mean most entertaining) drawing of Luke Doucet in action wins a fabulous prize: Luke's new live record, Veal's Embattled Hearts record, Luke's Aloha Manitoba record, a Six Shooter compilation CD, and the glory of having your beautiful artwork posted on the Six Shooter website. Yaaaaa!

DANCE PARTY!

Christine Fellows is doing music for a dance thing. It's gonna be totally sweeeet.

oh...you want more details?

fine then:

Diving Girl, Karen Kuzak's latest work, is this epic dance jam in which four dancers (who I am told are exquisite) do some serious dancin'. The piece has an original score by our very own Christine Fellows and the whole shebang was filmed by Caelum Vatnsdal shot on location at Lake Winnipeg. Judging by the name I can only speculate that perhaps some of it was filmed in Lake Winnipeg.

Wanna see it?
go here:
Winnipeg Sept 23-25 at the Gas Station Theatre Calgary Sept 30-Oct. 1 at Studio West Toronto, Jan. 19-22 at Dancemakers Centre for Creation.
