VEAL & LUKE DOUCET
Veal's recent cross Canada romp was filled with all kinds of wacky hijinx, the likes of which have not been seen since the (cult classic) movie "Getting Even With Dad" starring Ted Danson and Macaulay Culkin. No really, you have no idea how many garden rakes Chang accidentally stepped on. Thanks to all y'all who represented at the shows and picked up the new CD. if you just can't seem to get enough veal, drop Much Music (ondemand@muchmusic.com) a line and request the "I hate your lipstick" video, which features the boys pretending to play rock music in a large yellow bathroom.
The Veal boys are taking some time to reflect upon their past adventures and will resume their glorious touring schedule in the fall. The autumnal months will also bring Veal's return to the U.K., where Irish label Bright Star Recordings will be releasing the "I Hate Your Lipstick" single in September. The UK release of the "Embattled Hearts" album will follow in the winter. In the meantime, Chang will be spending his summer months scoping out hot new skinny dipping spots in Winnipeg, Nik will continue producing punk rock bands in Edmonton, screaming in his crazy new band Tha Whiz Kidz (8 songs in 10 minutes), and pretending he is a tennis pro with his new Richie Tenenbaum look (despite not having touched a tennis racket since he was 10 years old).
Luke on the other hand, never one to sit still for even a second (can someone lend him some gold bond?), hits a few festivals while waiting for the Veal machine to gear up again:
July 25-26 Stewart Park Festival, Perth
July 27 Toronto Blues Festival, with band
Aug 15 Regina Folk Festival, with band
Aug 20 Pyramid Cabaret, Winnipeg, with Chris Brown & Kate Fenner
Sept 6 Waynefest, Wayne, with band...and Nik mixing sound.
MARTIN TIELLI
Whew. It's done. Finally. Three and a half months late, but worth every minute. And every penny. Martin's long-awaited album, which took him longer to make than it took me to make a baby, is finished at last. Operation Infinite Joy was joyously mailed out to our fabulous subscription folks YESTERDAY! Hooray! So with any luck, Canada Post will have it in your hot hands in a matter of weeks (keeping fingers crossed). It's stunning. 24 pages of full colour art created by Martin over long smoke-filled nights in his lair. Ten (or 12, if you're a subscriber) luscious songs arduously built under the tutelage of Jedi Master Jon Goldsmith. Yowza! Watch for its release in September, accompanied by a full-on tour with his fabulous band and also with label-mate Christine Fellows.
Meanwhile, check out the Rheostatics this weekend:
July 25 El Mocambo, Toronto
July 26-27 Hillside Festival, Guelph
CAPTAIN TRACTOR
Shiver me freakin timbers it's been 10 years!? If they were married they'd be losing their kids to Pokemon and Hockey by now... but as they have been living in sin, the boys are all still sharing a bed in the back of a bus in a parking lot between Walmart and one of those fancy coffee shops. A tenth anniversary is supposed to celebrated with paper... PAPER?! What kind of crap is that? Send cheques or cash...that's the only paper the Tractor needs! And so after ten years of playing together, the tractor boys have grown so close that they have actually managed to graft one another's bodies together. The hulking mass of flesh with ten arms and nine legs (one of Jonny's didn't quite make the cut) still brings the party like no other, so drag your ass out of bed and stumble out to the following prairie freak shows:
Aug 21-23 O'Byrne's Fringe Party, Edmonton
Aug 29, The Drake, Canmore
Aug 31 Ironwood, Calgary
Sept 6 Waynefest, Wayne, AB
Sept 19 Sidetrack Cafe, Edmonton (official 10th Anniversary party)
Watch for more dates in Saskatchebum in late September.
CHRISTINE FELLOWS
Christine has mostly been hanging out all summer with Jam Jam and Lefty (really, who hasn't?), but she has also taken some time to hit the odd festival this summer. Check in with her at the Ottawa Folk Festival on Aug 23/24.
NQ ARBUCKLE
Mr. Arbuckle has been enjoying an increased amount of success lately due to confusion over that new Johnny Depp flick and the slightly piratesque nature of his name. Swab the decks at these yo-ho-ho's:
Aug. 2 Blacksheep Inn, Wakefield (Ottawa), with Soft Canyon
Aug 22 El Mocambo, Toronto (Steve Singh CD release party)
Beauty on,
Shauna (and Nik. And Brock.)
