February 2003

They say silence is a deafening sound

Mon, Feb 3, 2003, 1:16 PM

Hey everyone,

Happy belated groundhog day! I love this occasion because I've never really understood it. Of course there is going to be six more weeks of winter. At least. El Nino my ass. In this issue...

  1. Christine Fellows gets Frostbite

  2. Veal goes on reel and tours Edmonton

  3. MTV = Martin Tielli Television

  4. Germany dips Captain Tractor in mustard

  5. NQ book of lists

CHRISTINE FELLOWS

Christine is heading up north later this month, because Winnipeg just isn't cold enough for her this time of year. freeeeeeze:

WINNIPEG: Feb. 18, Academy Coffee Company, doors at 8, a duo with Leanne Zacharias on cello, tix are $7 at the door.

VANCOUVER: Feb. 19, The Sugar Refinery, doors at 9, a full band performance with Leanne Zacharias, Ford Pier, and Barry Mirochnick, tix are $8 at door.

LUKE DOUCET & VEAL

Luke has been working on his pasty white studio tan lately, contributing to recordings by Chris Stopa, Oh Susanna, and most recently, taking the producer's helm for Melissa McClelland's new record. This month he is back in action with only a mild allergy to sunlight.

TORONTO: Feb. 13, CLOSER TO THE HEART II, a benefit for the Regent Park School of Music, at Club 279 (279 Yonge St. above the Hard Rock Cafe), doors 7:30 p.m., tickets $15 at the door. See http://www.club279.com for a list of all the other cool cats performing.

VANCOUVER: Mar. 7, The Railway Club, with band, tix $10.

But wait, this just in!!! Veal is shooting a video in the glorious mecca of Edmonton at the end of the month. To celebrate Nik got his area code permanently etched onto his arm. Veal will also perform a plethora of *780* rock extravaganzas:

thurs. Feb. 27: Live on CJSR
fri. Feb. 28: Seedy's
sat. Mar. 1: The Black Dog (afternoon show)

The video is for I Hate Your Lipstick, and will be shot by the eminent Jeremy Chugg. We love him.

Chang has been considering extending his mysterious name to reflect the ever changing trends in pop music. Pending further pondering, he may or may not be known as Lil' Chang.

MARTIN TIELLI

Martin is one busy man. Saturday he visited CBC-TV for a taping of Zed. It won't air for a while (we'll keep you posted), but you can get your Martin fix tonight. His video for I'll Never Tear You Apart airs on Bravo! sometime between 6:00 and 6:30 EST.

Says John Doyle of the Globe and Mail: "Bravo!FACT Videos (Bravo!, 6 p.m.) is a sizzling little anthology of recent outstanding, artsy videos made for Bravo! The big draw is the debut of the latest from director Guy Maddin. His Fancy, Fancy Being Rich is in his usual vein. Part opera and faux silent film, it's as gothic as all get-out and mordantly funny while being insanely sexy....But the standout, for me, is a startlingly beautiful video for Rheostatics guitarist Martin Tielli's gorgeous song I'll Never Tear You Apart. That one's a heartbreaker." Awww. Sweet-ass!

Today Martin resumes recording on the first of the epic Tielli 2003 series. If you haven't ordered your set yet, get on it....now! For those of you living in Toronto, there are a couple shows this month you will want to take in, too. Details are a bit sketchy (ie. Martin didn't know anything more than this), but place your bets on:

Feb. 8 Massey Hall Rheostatics play "some sort of benefit"
Feb. 24 Art of Time Nick Buzz performs some Schoenberg pieces
Feb. 26 Phoenix Rheostatics play...maybe it's another benefit

It's a good thing you love vagueness...right?

Remember to don those white socks on February 25! uh, what? Ya, that's Martin Tielli Day. Treat yourself to a Galoise Blue, too.

CAPTAIN TRACTOR

We may or may not see Captain Tractor hit Canmore at the end of the month, it depends on who you ask. Nothing is confirmed though, so oops. But hey, the Albertan boys were nominated band of the month from a zine in Germany. Have a pretzel and a weissbier at www.pennydreadful.de.

NQ ARBUCKLE

Woooot! Our dear Nev's debut release stirred a lot of hearts in the press at the end of the year. Named in the Top Twenty Albums of 2003 in the Toronto Star and in the Top Ten Local Releases in NOW Magazine, "Hanging the Battle-scarred Pinata" is a hit! The Ottawa Xpress also named the Luke Doucet/NQ Arbuckle performance at the Black Sheep Inn as one of the top concerts of the year. Woooot again!

Sadly, though, you'll have to wait until March to actually see NQ on stage. Scream something in his favor during Canadian Music Week at the end of the month at the newly re-opened El Mocambo in Toronto.

Oh, and one more thing...in France the ladies wear no pants.
