1. CHRISTINE FELLOWS
Christine's relentless tour schedule brings her back to Ontario for more shows in June. She has taken up the odd habit of giving audience members vicious noogies if they get too close, so look out. Holla'!
TORONTO: Three shows:
Fri. June 7 @ C'est What (midnight), NxNE
Tues. June 18 @ The Horseshoe Tavern
Wed. June 19 @ The Rivoli
BUFFALO: Sun. June 9 @ Sundays Rock-Street Festival
ST. CATHARINES: Tues. June 11 @ Mansion House
HAMILTON: Wed. June 12 @ The Raven
GUELPH: Thurs. June 13 @ Jimmy Jazz
OTTAWA: Two shows:
Fri. June 14 @ The Black Sheep Inn, (Wakefield), and
Mon. June 17 @ Zaphod's
KINGSTON: Sat. June 15 @ The Shot
MONTREAL: Sun. June 16 @ The Jupiter Room
2. LUKE DOUCET/VEAL
After spending the month of May in the studio mixing the new Veal record with bassist Nik Kozub and studmuffin/producer Steven Drake, Luke takes off again to the UK for a couple shows:
LONDON: Two shows:
ХаSat. June 1, Kashmir Klub (under Fabrizio's on the corner of Nottingham Place and Paddington St.); and
ХаSun. June 2, Tin Pan Alley Jubilee Steet Party (in front of the 12-Bar, which is 22/23 Denmark Place), 2:45 - 3:15 pm
BRIGHTON: Mon. June 3, Greys Pub, 105 Southover Street
...And catch Luke playing with Oh Susanna for the Queen's Jubilee at Hyde Park on the afternoon of June 3rd, 4 pm to be exact. Also watch out for the Queen.
WE NEED TRANSPORT: Luke and I are obsessing about how he's going to get from London to Brighton in under three hours on a holiday Monday. He will pay cold hard cash to anyone willing to give him a lift (he would like to avoid certain death if he attempted to drive on the other side of the road). We really need to find Luke a ride, so if you're able to help out, please let me know ASAP. It'll be fun! He is good company and he has one of those horribly crass Canadian accents that only get worse when you add beer. Go ahead, try it. We dare you.
ps. This includes a free ticket to see him play in Brighton.
Luke then jets back to Canada for a couple more shows and some camping:
HAMILTON: Wed. June 5 @ The Raven, Hamilton, with Martin Tielli
TORONTO: Thurs. June 6 @ The Horseshoe Tavern (9 pm), NxNE
ALBERTA: June 22-24 @ North Country Fair, Peace River, AB
3. MARTIN TIELLI
Ford Pier and Barry Mirochnick stroll into town next week for the second round of recording sessions on Martin's new album, joining the ever fabulous Greg Smith, and the uber slick recording team of Jon Goldsmith and Jeff McMurrich. We also found some time to set up a couple shows:
HAMILTON: Wed. June 5 @ The Raven, with Luke Doucet, showtime 9 pm
TORONTO: Thurs. June 6 @ The Horseshoe Tavern (midnight), NxNE
OTTAWA: Sun. June 9 @ the Black Sheep Inn, (Wakefield), with Selena
Martin, early performance -- showtime 8:15 pm.
The video for the Rheostatics' single, P.I.N., has been added into rotation on Much More Music. It's the best damned video I've seen. Ever. Though it seems that the folks at Much Music need a little convincing, 'cuz they're all ga ga over the latest Alanis More Upset video. So please, send relentless requests to ondemand@muchmusic.com until they capitulate.
4. MIA SHEARD
Mia plays with her full band at NXNE on Friday, June 7th at C'est What, 9pm. She and her band will also be performing at Chemical Sound's 10th anniversary party at the Rivoli in Toronto on Friday, May 31, along with Mellonova, The Swallows and Ron Hawkins.
Oh, and Toronto folks...take a walk on the wild side and check out the show at Cafe May on May 30 (TONIGHT). Mia is one of a string of fabulous performers toasting this groovy Roncesvalles club, alongside Frank Nevada, Dan Goldman, Kurt Swinghammer, Bluebird, Jason Collett, Chris Brown, Selina Martin, Tom Wilson, Reid Jamieson, Josh Finlayson, Andy Maize, Kat Goldman, Jack Breakfast, NQ Arbuckle, and Martin Tielli. Hmmm...maybe get there early. Tickets are 10 smackers.
5. NQ ARBUCKLE + RICHARD BUCKNER
We haven't talked about dear NQ Arbuckle in quite some time. We actually had to enlist the services of our Sixshooter Elite Ninja Posse (S.E.N.P.) to track him down and find out what he's been up to. Several grappling hooks and nunchuk twirls later we discovered that he returned to the studio and has finally finished mixing and mastering his record, and is now putting finishing touches on the artwork. We're peeing with excitement about it over here, we even picked a Neville lyric for this month's title, though the record itself won't be available in stores until the fall. We are trying to get some advance copies ready in time for his upcoming shows with Richard Buckner:
OTTAWA: Thurs. June 13 @ The Black Sheep Inn
WATERLOO: Fri. June 14 @ The Jane Bond
TORONTO: Sat. June 15 @ The Horseshoe Tavern
Also note that Richard Buckner plays sans NQ here:
HALIFAX: Sat. June 8 @ The Marquee
WINNIPEG: Tues. June 18 @ West End Cultural Centre
6. HOT RED LIPS
Congrats to Captain Tractor's Chris Wynters, who was nominated for three Sterling awards (Edmonton's theatre awards) for Best musical composition, Best musical, and Best musical director for his production of "Red Lips". Find out who wins on June 17th. This is not the first go-around for Chris in this arena...he and Scott Peters (also of CT) won for composition for their production of "Frankenstein, The Musical" in 1994. With the acclaim that "Red Lips" is receiving, we think Chris should finish his sequel: "Brown Teeth".
7. SIXSHOOTER AT NXNE
You may have noticed that just about everyone on our roster is playing NxNE in Toronto June 6-8. Here's a quick recap for those of you with gig guides and hi-liters ready:
Luke Doucet, Thursday 9 pm, Horseshoe Tavern
Martin Tielli, Thursday Midnight, Horseshoe Tavern
Mia Sheard, Friday 9 pm, C'est What
Christine Fellows, Friday Midnight, C'est What
We love NxNE 'cuz it marks our anniversary every year...this year, Six Shooter Records gets to put two candles on our cake, rub birthday cake in our hair, put Smarties up our nose & dump apple juice on the floor--but what do you want?? We're only two.
Beauty on,
Shauna
