Hello everyone! Due to annoying technical difficulties with bcentral, I didn't get a newsletter out last month. So I switched services and we're back in action.
In this issue...

  • Christine Fellows joins the ranks

  • Luke Doucet serves up some Veal

  • Mia Sheard warms up for the studio

  • SixShooter Bullets: * Martin Tielli lets Nick Buzz out of its cage * Jonny and Nik of Captain Tractor fame both unleash new albums * lodestarmusic.com ups the ante * NQ Arbuckle has a few live treats in store * six shooter makes some resolutions

CHRISTINE FELLOWS

Woo hoo! Six shooter records is ablaze with excitement about the addition of Christine Fellows to our roster. And a big welcome goes out to Christine Fellows fans who were added to this list (you were probably wondering what that welcome e-mail was all about). Christine hails from Winnipeg (hooray for us prairie girls), and I was introduced to her amazing work some time ago via fellow Pegger Luke Doucet. Christine's stunning first record, "2 little birds" was released on the very fine Winnipeg label Endearing Records, and I'm delighted that she has brought her next project to us. She's a joy, and her new disc, "The Last One Standing" is simply beautiful. Like all six shooter artists, her lyrics are exceptional and the music is divine. Lots of strings, a wicked piano, interesting percussion, and an incredible voice. Street date for the new disc is March 5. Stay tuned for news on a string of performances across the country.

LUKE DOUCET

Hot off some great shows in Winnipeg, including a hugely successful fundraiser for the Sunshine house with the above-mentioned Christine Fellows, John Samson, and Nathan, Luke finds himself back and forth between Canada and the UK this month:

WATERLOO, ON: Jan. 10, Jan. 17, and Jan 30 at the Jane Bond, free admission.
LONDON, ENGLAND: Thursday, January 24 at the Twelve Bar.
BRIGHTON, ENGLAND: Saturday, January 26 at the Greys Pub.

VEAL...Some of you may have caught Luke and Chang's reunion at the Veal shows in December, but if you didn't, here's another chance:

HAMILTON: January 11 at the Raven, 10 pm, $6, with openers The Noseriders
TORONTO: January 12 at the Rivoli, 10 pm, $8, with the ever-so-cool NQ Arbuckle opening.

Up next: Veal plays some Alberta shows in February before heading into the studio to make a rock record with Steven Drake (The Odds).

MIA SHEARD

Mia Sheard has also got a couple dates in store for us:

MONTREAL: Wed. Jan. 23 at Cafe del Popolo, with Kenny Smilovitch, $5.
KINGSTON: Fri. Jan. 25 at the Queen's Grad Club, $5.
OTTAWA: Sat. Jan 26 at Zaphod's, supporting Spookey Ruben, doors at 8 pm, $8.

Up next: Watch for a Valentine's Day show in Toronto before Mia heads into the studio to make her third album. Can't wait!

SIX SHOOTER BULLETS

  • MARTIN TIELLI...Martin leaves such things as New Year's resolutions to the bourgeoisie, but this year, maybe because 2002 is a palindrome, we did set a few goals. First up is the much awaited re-release of "Circo", the Nick Buzz album Martin recorded years ago with Hugh Marsh, Rob Piltch, and Jon Goldsmith. Watch for details in the March issue of this newsletter. Next is a national tour with his band, also in March, which will include at least a half dozen dates in western Canada. After that, Martin heads into the studio to make another solo record, this time with a bunch of other rockin' musicians in tow. And if that isn't enough, we're hoping to present the first ever exhibition of Martin's paintings. Stay tuned!

  • Captain Tractor won't likely be playing any shows until March, but the various members of the band have been busy busy. Sound god Nik Kozub and his band, THE CLEATS, released a very fine punk rock record on Vancouver*s Longshot Records. Chang calls The Cleats Canada's Pennywise. Their release show with label-mates The Wednesday Night Heroes in Edmonton kicked me in the pants!

  • And Big Ass JONNY NORDSTROM's new debut solo record, called "Brick and Stone" will soon be available on lodestarmusic.com. Visit Jonny's charming site at www.jonnordstrom.com, and watch for Brick and Stone's official release in March of 2002.

  • Speaking of www.lodestarmusic.com, you can now pick up a copy of RON HAWKINS's new record, "Airports to the World". In addition to this bitchin' CD, Lodestar webmaster found some time over the holidays to reload a number of other records that used to be available on the site, but got lost due to web tech stuff that I couldn't begin to understand. Check it out starting next week to discover back catalogue albums by Fred Eaglesmith, Mike Plume, The Rockin' Highliners and much more.

  • NQ Arbuckle still doesn't know when his next record, "The Battle-Scarred Pinata", will be released, but he and his deadly band are playing with Veal at the Rivoli on Jan. 12. Rumour has it he'll be playing another Toronto date on Jan. 26.

  • The new year promises to be a busy one for six shooter. New records by Christine Fellows, Nick Buzz, Veal, Martin Tielli, old NQ, and maybe a few other treats as well (keep your fingers crossed - we might finally shake hands with the astonishingly talented Paul MacLeod). Mia Sheard has got a record coming out, too, so all in all, we're looking at six or more records this year.

Best of luck to all of you in the new year. Until next month... beauty on!
