LUKE DOUCET/VEAL

HEADS UP! Don't miss Luke Doucet this Saturday at THE RIVOLI in Toronto, with Bazil Donovan (Blue Rodeo) on stand up bass, and Paul Brennan on drums. Tariq opens the show, tix $7.

No rest for the wicked... Luke will also be appearing in a songwriter series, with Jason Collett, Jim Bryson, and Ruby Drake:

KINGSTON: Sun. Apr 28, Scherzo Pub
TORONTO: Mon. Apr 29, Rancho Relaxo
HAMILTON: Tues. Apr 30, The Casbah
WATERLOO: Wed. May 1, The Jane Bond
PETERBOROUGH: Thurs. May 2, The Gordon Best Theatre

Luke will be making an appearance with Carolyn Mark at the Georgia Straight Music Awards in Vancouver on Wed. May 8. Apparently, Luke is up for "Best Canadian Male". This likely means that he will be stripping.

Luke will be in Vancouver most of May to finish mixing the chiefin' new Veal record with Steven Drake, Nik and Chang. After that, he buggers off to the UK for a bit:

Sat. June 1, Kashmir Klub, London
Sun. June 2, The Greys, Brighton

Watch for a couple more UK dates before or after these, with a possible show in Dublin. I'll send a mid-month update as Luke's tour plans become more solid.

In other Veal news: Chang has been spending his time away from the studio playing that popular new blend of blues and Kung Fu. It's kind of like a bummed out Chuck Norris vibe, ya dig? Nik has been hiding out in Edmonton (a.k.a. the land of perpetual winter) producing heavy metal records and consuming absolutely unheard of amounts of really strong coffee. Nik has also been considering holding auditions for a folk-funk concept band called Hacky Sack: all positive jams, all the time. Does anyone know how to play those little hippy drums?

CHRISTINE FELLOWS

Most of this stuff here about Christine was boosted straight from Christine's website, written by that cutie-petutie Steve Carroll, who somehow is utterly charming despite the fact that he's up to his eyeballs managing two of (and playing in one of) Winnipeg's hottest acts. Could he be using a bizarre form of nouveau hypnosis?

First up is news about Christine's upcoming romp with celebrated folk festival starlets from Australia, The Waifs. This tour starts in beautiful Winnipeg and heads west making a stop in almost every town on the way (no big city snobbery here). Christine will be with the Waifs on all their dates right through to sunny Tofino, BC. And she'll be picking up some of her own shows on the way back home - playing dates in the golden wheatie waves of Alberta with Calgary's Rob Ursel (undiscovered wonderkid, not to be missed). Bust out your palm pilots:

With The Waifs...

WINNIPEG: Wed. May 8, West End Cultural Centre
REGINA: Thurs. May 9, The Exchange
CALGARY: Fri. May 10 at Kilberry's
CALGARY: Sat. May 11 at MacEwan Hall, U of C. Note: early show! 8 pm
BANFF: Sun. May 12, Margaret Greenham Theatre
SALMON ARM: Tues. May 14, Salmar Theatre
KELOWNA: Wed. May 15, Creekside Theatre
VANCOUVER: Thurs. May 16, Richard's on Richards
VICTORIA: Fri. May 17, Lucky Bar
COURTENAY: Sat. May 18, Sid Williams Theatre
TOFINO: Sun. May 19, The Legion
With Rob Ursel...

VICTORIA: Mon. May 20, Thursdays
VANCOUVER: Tues. May 21, Sugar Refinery
LETHBRIDGE: Thurs. May 23, Hugo's, with Rob Ursel
CALGARY: Sat. May 25, Ship and Anchor. Note: afternoon show

Already crowned belle of the Canadian Music Week Ball, Christine might now be called the Queen of the College airwaves, charting for seven solid weeks since the release of the record, hitting a high of #2 in the national charts and standing firm in the top ten at hordes of stations from Victoria to Guelph. Can I get a hell yeah?!

Sadly, though, despite all these coronations and accolades, a lot of people have been complaining they can't find the album in record stores. If you go into your local record store, and you can't find Christine's new record The Last One Standing (or Two Little Birds her debut cd), we suggest that you ask them to stock these fine audio recordings. If they prove unreceptive or confused, throw a "hissy fit" until your demands are met. A technique that seems to be working for our elite team of sixshooter agents is to handcuff yourself to the retail outlet's staff toilet while simply droning the words Chrrrriiiiisssstttiiinnne Felllllowwwwsss over and over and over again in the highest pitch monotone feasible until the albums appear in your grubby mitts.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the release of The Last One Standing, and to all those who played it on the crowded airwaves, gave her a show, backed her up or came to a show and got down.

MARTIN TIELLI

Martin Tielli scored a hat trick yesterday, nailing three great projects in one period. He shot a video for "I'll Never Tear You Apart" (thank you very much, Bravofact), directed by Justin Stephenson and his fabulous crew at Catherine North in Hamilton, the same place where he made the record. Then he raced back to Toronto, and performed this same song with plenty of moxy and fervour on CBC-TV Newsworld's new show called "Play", which is hosted by Moxy Fruvous dude, Jian Ghomeshi (go figure). It'll run a couple times this weekend all over the world (for those of you with cable tv) if you want to catch it. The capper to the evening was the GAScd fundraiser. The Rheos put on a fantastically energetic show, and during the finale, the boys were joined by ex-drummers Dave Clark and Don Kerr, three of the BNL crew (Stephen, Tyler, and Jim), Chris Brown, Kate Fenner, and Tony Scherr. Somehow, "Horses" morphed into a Pink Floyd cover, which morphed to the weird but hilarious ly rical improv stylings of Stephen and Tyler. A rare treat indeed. If you haven't done so already, you should pick up a copy of the GAScd, a project which raises funds for the legal defense of the protesters in Montreal. As Stephen put it, have you ever met a millionaire hippie?

Nick Buzz is receiving A+ reviews across the country, and is somehow being hailed as a classic by critics everywhere. We were wondering, doesn't an album actually have to sell a lot of copies before it becomes a classic? As the beautiful Jon Goldsmith noted, we nonetheless think it's gratifying to witness Nick Buzz's startlingly rapid ascendance from the inky depths of total obscurity to the dizzying heights of almost total obscurity.

Still nauseous and reeling from their fantastic cross Canada tour in March/April, Martin and his band, Operation Infinite Justice, swagger into the studio in May with the aforementioned Jon Goldsmith to start Martin's next record. This isn't going to be any quiet acoustic affair, but a full blown rock extravaganza. In talking to Martin about his goals for this project, the answer might lay somewhere between "making Queen look tame" and "confusing people even more". We'll see what happens.

SIX SHOOTER BULLETS

  • MIA SHEARD will also be playing this Saturday (April 27), guerrilla (no, not gorilla) style, in Toronto with Justin Haynes and Dan Goldman at a funky place called "Cafe May" on Roncesvalles, right beside the Revue Cinema (near Howard Park). 10pm. The west end just keeps getting cooler. Mia is also playing in Toronto on May 20th for another Maple Monday at Rancho Relaxo, home of cattle herding and hammocks.

  • CAPTAIN TRACTOR is moving out. We're tired of paying for our expensive office in Edmonton when we have a perfectly expensive office space in Toronto. So we're going to clean out the basement and excavate all the "highly collectible" crap we've accumulated over the years. Maybe we'll have an auction at the merch booth at the next CT show, which is in Edmonton at the Sidetrack Cafe on May 17 & 18. We are hoping to get top dollar for Jonny's toenail collection and Brock's louse farm. Or maybe we'll put it all in Jules' basement, where it belongs.

  • NQ Arbuckle is not just a figment of my imagination. You can see for yourself on May 3rd at Oasis in Toronto. For those of you who don't live in Toronto, you'll have to wait until his album is finally released. I have it on the highest authority that he is finishing the mixes next week amid many smokes and scotches.

  • Six Shooter is up and interwebbing. Many tweaks yet to be done, but you can see it, warts and all, on www.sixshooterrecords.com. Thanks to the web apprenticeship of Linda Woods and Laura Quartarone, to Ford Pier for the groovy icons, and to Deborah Ann for the endlessly delightful prose. And thanks to PromoFact, whose continued support has also helped us mount websites for Luke and Martin. Hell yeah!
