The Glories of Coleslaw

Hello darlings, We're a bit late with November's newsletter (suffering from grant application fatigue), but no worries -- touring season is slowing down somewhat as most of the Six Shooter gang are gearing up for recording in 2001.
In this issue...

LUKE DOUCET

Hello to all our new friends in the UK, Paris, and west coast North America! Luke's first solo tour overseas was a boatload of fun, and he's planning to return in January. His hectic schedule continues with a number of shows closer to home this month:

TORONTO: Thurs. Nov. 8 at the Art Bar, Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen St. W.), 9:30 pm, with N.Q. Arbuckle opening.
MONTREAL: Sat. Nov. 10 at Club Zone, 9 pm, $6...a songwriter night with Tamara Williamson, renann, and Paul MacLeod.
KINGSTON: Sun. Nov 11 at The Scherzo Pub, 9 pm, $6...again with Tamara Williamson, renann, and Paul MacLeod.
LONDON: Thurs. Nov 15 at Fanshawe College, noon, free admission.
HALIFAX: Sat. Nov 24 at Hell (downstairs from the Marquee), 9 pm (note: Luke will be finished his set before the Rheostatics show upstairs that same night...you can see both for the price of one admission).

MARTIN TIELLI

Martin's website, www.martintielli.com, is now up and running, though there are still a few tweaks to be done. You can download "The Bridge", which is a beautiful track we recorded for Poppy Salesman but cut in the interest of brevity. You can also download a live bootleg of Martin's tribute to Wayne Omaha, a song called "Beauty On" (which will likely be recorded for Martin's next solo record), performed at the wunderbar Jane Bond in Waterloo on September 30.

Martin's record is going great guns, with rounds of blazing reviews and a stronghold in the top ten of the college charts, where it's been ranked since its debut. Thanks for spreading the word about this beautiful record.

The Rheostatics embark on their 11 day journey at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto tomorrow. Kicking off this marathon is an appearance on the Mike Bullard show tonight. Tune in! Later this month, the Rheos perform in Moncton on Nov. 22, at UNB/The Cellar in Fredericton on Nov. 23, and at the Marquee in Halifax on the 24th.

SIX BULLETS

  • Bullet #1: MIA SHEARD had a great time on her short solo tour of western Canada last month and she'll be taking most of this month to continue writing her next record. Next scheduled performance for Mia is the Rock for Women benefit in Kingston on December 7th at the Grand Theatre (box office 613-530-2050).

  • Bullet #2: No Captain Tractor performances are confirmed in November, but for those folks in Edmonton, SCOTT PETERS is hosting another Radio Wednesday at the Sidetrack Cafe on November 14th with special guests Barry Greenfield, and showstopping newcomer Ann Vriend (fourth participant to be confirmed). CHRIS WYNTERS also hosts a popular evening every Tuesday at the Druid.

  • Bullet #3: RICHARD BUCKNER is also busy working on a new record, and will perform a couple shows in Ontario in the New Year. I'll keep you posted.

  • Bullet #4: We're still trying to figure out a release date for N.Q. Arbuckle's debut album (I promise it will be worth the wait)...sometime in the new year, we're thinking. Not quite sure what our dear Neville is up to, but he did say band practice last night was great fun. Next up is a show with Luke Doucet at the Art Bar, Gladstone Hotel, in Toronto this Thursday.

  • Bullet #5: Just say no to shopping malls and visit us on-line at www.lodestarmusic.com, our modest but groovy CD store. In addition to all the fantastic Six Shooter artists, the site also features the past/present Square Dog roster (Oh Susanna, Jim Bryson, Bellwether, Shannon Lyon, Mike Plume Band, Rockin' Highliners, Northern Pikes), the Blue Rodeo and related artists catalogue (Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor, Bob Egan, The Swallows), a posse of fine artists from sunny Alberta (I know, my roots are showing: Jr. Gone Wild, Ian Tyson, Mike McDonald Band, Plaid Tongued Devils), and a whack more of kick-butt songwriters (such as Feist, Kinnie Starr, Emmylou Harris, Eleni Mandell, Fred Eaglesmith, Simon Wilcox, Danny Michel).

  • Bullet #6: I lifted a snappy lyric from Martin's new record for the title of this missive, so I couldn't resist including a recipe for the delightfully named "Aloha Coleslaw", which I also lifted, this time from Luke's great aunt Denyse, who claims it's the best she's ever eaten, and we all trust Denyse, don't we? Take a medium head of green cabbage, rinsed and very thinly sliced; a large carrot, shredded; a (15 ounce) can of crushed pineapple, drained; a cup of mayonnaise and a teaspoon salt...huck it all together in a large bowl, stir it up and chill for an hour.
